Conference "On Colophons"
Universität Hamburg,
3rd to 5th of December, 2009
Colophons are encountered frequently in most of the world's manuscript
cultures. Although they are an indispensable aid to the study of
manuscripts, for example as a means of dating manuscripts or obtaining
information about their transmission, to date few efforts have been made to
examine them on a systematic and comparative basis. We aim to fill this gap
at this conference, the first to be organized by the research group
'Manuscript Cultures in Asia and Afrika' at Universität Hamburg.
During the conference, we hope to address the topic with specialists from
various fields of study. As far as we know, this will be the first time the
topic has been considered by giving special attention to discussion of the
diverse manuscript traditions based on different writing cultures. Although
the majority of participants will be working on text-based manuscript
cultures, we also welcome contributions from neighbouring fields such as
Art History and Medieval Studies.
