This conference will investigate the role of photographic archives
in art historical studies, with an emphasis on image collections
that were formed "scientifically" - that is with the specific
purpose of aiding research. The discipline of art history and
image reproduction technologies have developed concurrently and
their own histories are closely interlinked. After a first part
in London, which was focused on photography's role in shaping art
history, the second part of the conference will be held in
Florence. Here the history, nature, and influence of specific
archives will be discussed. An important focus will be on the
historical process of the institutionalization of photo archives:
who build the archive and for what purpose? How is it organized
and made accessible? How is it preserved? This will lead to a
debate on the current functions and finally on the future of
photo archives. Stronger attention will be placed on the
materiality of the photographic object and of the archive itself
as research environment not only for art history, but also for
other disciplines like the history of science, the history of
photography, anthropology and visual studies.

Die Tagung untersucht den Zusammenhang von Photoarchiven und
kunsthistorischer Forschung, wobei der Akzent auf
"wissenschaftlichen" Photosammlungen liegt - also Photosammlungen,
die explizit zu Forschungszwecken aufgebaut wurden. Die Disziplin
Kunstgeschichte und die Techniken der Bildreproduktion haben sich
parallel entwickelt und ihre Geschichten sind eng miteinander
verflochten. Nach einem ersten Teil in London, der auf den prägenden
Einfluss der Photographie auf die Kunstgeschichte fokussiert war,
wird der zweite Teil der Tagung in Florenz stattfinden. Hier werden
Geschichte, Eigenheiten und Wirkung spezifischer Photoarchive im
Zentrum der Diskussion stehen. Ein Schwerpunkt wird dabei auf dem
historischen Prozess der Institutionalisierung von Photoarchiven
liegen: Wer legt das Archiv an und zu welchen Zwecken? Wie ist es
organisiert und zugänglich gemacht? Wie wird es aufbewahrt? Dies
wird zu einer Debatte über die aktuellen Funktionen und letztlich
über die Zukunft von Photoarchiven führen. Ausgangspunkt ist eine
stärkere Aufmerksamkeit für die Materialität des photographischen
Objekts sowie des Archivs selbst als wissenschaftliche Umgebung für
innovative Fragestellungen nicht nur in der Kunstgeschichte,
sondern auch in anderen Disziplinen wie Wissenschaftsgeschichte,
Photogeschichte, Anthropologie und Visual Studies.
