DESIGN SYMPOSIUM

Das diesjähhrige DMY Design Symposium stellt sich der Aufgabe,
gegenwärtige Konzepte der Design-Methodik und Produktion im
gesellschaftlichen Kontext zu analysieren sowie diese zur Diskussion
zu stellen.

Wir sehen uns konfrontiert mit ökologischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und
politischen Krisen. Zugleich setzt ein breit gestreutes gesellschaftliches
Umdenken ein. Die Entstehung einer globalen ökonomischen, kommunikativen
und medialen Identität wird begleitet von der Wiederentdeckung lokaler
Lebensaspekte und nachhaltiger Prinzipien. Wir leben in einer Zeit der
Infragestellung des gewohnten Status Quo.
In dieser Ära ist involviertes und kritisches Handeln seitens der Designer
sowie eine bewusste Konsumentenhaltung von großer Bedeutung. Angesichts
einer Überproduktion gleichwertiger Produkttypologien ist die
Unterscheidung zwischen Wunsch und Bedürfnis für eine nachhaltige
Zukunftsvision entscheidend. Welche Rolle kann Design in der nahen Zukunft
in einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft übernehmen? Welche Aspekte werden
sich als entscheidend für das Design herausstellen? Das Design Symposium
wird einige der außergewöhnlichen und wegweisenden Projekte und Haltungen
vorstellen, mit denen Designer auf diese und weitere Fragen reagieren und
Stellung beziehen. Dazu zählen politische und kritische Konzepte;
nachhaltige und (g)lokale Projekte und Systeme; die (Rück)Eroberung des
öffentlichen Raumes; institutionelle Strategien, Analysen, Forecasts u.v.m.
Die Lectures und Talks werden von internationalen Sprechern aus
verschiedenen Disziplinen geführt. Darunter befinden sich Designer,
Architekten, Kuratoren, Umweltstrategen, Vertreter von Institutionen und

Das DMY International Design Festival Berlin findet vom 3.-7. Juni in
Berlin mit Ausstellungen, Workshops, Lectures und Parties zur Gegenwart des
Designs statt.

DESIGN SYMPOSIUM
Systems revised: The Inner Workings of Critical, Sustainable and
Foward-Looking Concepts

Location: Kunstfabrik, Am Flutgraben 3, Berlin
Time: Saturday, June 6 2009, 11:00-20:30

This year's DMY Design Symposium takes on the task to analyze current
concepts of design methodology and production in a social context and puts
them up for discussion. We find ourselves confronted with ecological,
economical, social and political crises. At the same time a widely spread
social rethinking has begun. The evolution of a worldwide economic,
communicative and media based identity is accompanied by the rediscovery of
regionally orientated aspects of life and principles of sustainability. We
most definitely live in a time where the present status quo is challenged.
Times such as these call for involved and critical action on the part of
designers as well as a conscious stance on the consumers¹ side. Given the
existing surplus production of tantamount product typologies, the
distinction between desire and necessity will be significant for a
sustainable vision of our future. What can be the future role of design in
a multicultural society? Which aspects will turn out to be crucial for the
design field?
The Design Symposium will introduce some of the exceptional and
groundbreaking projects and positions developed by designers who react to,
and take a position towards these and additional questions. Among these are
political and critical concepts; sustainable and (g)local projects and
systems; the (re)clamation of public space; institutional strategies,
analyses, forecasts et al.
The lectures and talks will be held by renowned speakers from a widespread
spectrum of disciplines; among those designers, architects, curators,
environmental consultants and representatives from institutions and NGOs.

The DMY International Design Festival takes place from June 3 to 7
presenting a wide range of exhibitions, lectures, workshops,
performances and parties in Berlin.
