Celebrating Life Images 2009
Lectures Series

In the Darwin Year 2009 Science Center Tartu University Library and
Science Centre AHHAA are co-organizing the series of lectures
"Celebrating Life Images" which take place in cafes and restaurants in
Tartu (Estonia) on Wednesdays after 6pm.

The lectures are held by a scientist and a scholar, either from
Estonian or abroad, and focus on the beauty of scientific figures and
artistic images. Their underlying theme is:

"Whether we look at a cell, a gene, an animal, or a plant, and pencil
their shapes, whether we classify their evolution, recall past
knowledge, or simulate future data of the biological sciences, our
talks take to revealing the splendor of Life."

The 4th lecture "Life Images, or Art of Life" will be delivered by
Dr. Matthias Bruhn (Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik
"Das Technische Bild", Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany) and
Professor Juhan Maiste (Institute of Art History, Tartu University,
Estonia) at the Cafe Shakespeare on Wednesday, April 8, 2009.

'Walking into the artes, but looking towards the sciences' will be the
theme of their lectures. Both have chosen the time around 1800 as
point of departure for depicting the relationship between the visual
arts and the natural sciences. Focusing on the profession of
scientific illustrators Matthias Bruhn will sketch how the artist's
pencil influenced the perception of scientists when observing bodies
and bones with the microscope. Adding the architectural and enlighted
perspective Juhan Maiste will portray how Tartu University artists
Carl Senff and Georg Friedrich Schlater combined the idealism of the
18th century to the brush of a new attitude towards framing empirical
data in a revolutionary fashion.
