What does it mean for a work of art to be "authentic"? The fascinating
philosophical and
practical issues that arise in answering that question sometimes result
in legal disputes, and developments in contemporary art have made these
issues even more complex. For example, traditional notions of
authenticity may be strained when the artist has no direct hand in the
production of an artwork, or when the work is composed of everyday
objects or uses nontraditional media. In this program, leading scholars,
experts and practitioners will explore what happens when the
authenticity of art is challenged. Recent cases involving the work of
Warhol, Pollock, Calder and others will be discussed.
