School of Humanities, University of Reading, Postgraduate Open Day, 25
November 2008.
Classics, History, History of Art and Philosophy

Potential applicants for graduate programmes in History of Art in the School
of Humanities, University of Reading, are invited to our postgraduate open
day on 25 November 2008.

The School of Humanities was established on 1 August 2005 and comprises the
disciplines of Classics, History, History of Art and Philosophy. It hosts
many research centres: the Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies (GCMS); the
Early Modern Research Centre (EMRC); the Centre for Hellenic Studies (CHS);
the Centre for Modern Italian History (CMIH); and the Centre for the Advanced
Study of French History (CASFH). Situated at the centre of the Whiteknights
campus, the School offers an exciting programme of postgraduate degrees, and
provides an exceptional range of opportunities for studying for higher
degrees by research.

History of Art is one of the leading and longest-established departments of
its kind in the country. Members of the department conduct and supervise
research in many aspects of art and architectural history and theory
particularly Renaissance architecture, Italian Baroque art and modern and
contemporary art. The department houses the University Drawings Collection,
an important teaching and research resource, comprising master drawings from
the fifteenth to the twentieth century. The research culture of History of
Art is further enhanced by its membership of a regional network (RX-History
of Art) for research exchange, which includes the universities of Bristol,
Warwick, Birmingham, Roehampton, Oxford Brookes and Kingston. We currently
have over fifteen research students working on doctorates in subjects ranging
from architectural history in the Italian Renaissance to modern and
contemporary art in international contexts.

Our programme will run twice – in the morning at 9.30 for 10 and again in the
afternoon at 12.30 for 2 – and you can attend either session. Lunch is
provided if you let us know in advance.

Each session begins and ends in Old Whiteknights House, which houses the
Graduate School in Arts and Humanities with a visit to our School in between.
