Maria Stein-Lessing

Query: Maria Stein-Lessing

I am currently working on an exhibition in memory of the late Maria
Stein-Lessing who was teacher, collector and dealer in African art in
Johannesburg in the mid 20th century. In 1941 she opened L'™Afrique,
possibly the first shop in South Africa to sell African objects.

I would very much like to hear from anyone who might have information
about objects that were bought from her or originated from her
collections. There are a few published in The Power of Form: African Art
from the Horstmann Collection.

Information can be sent to my e-mail which is nessaljoburg.org.za.
