5 Junior Research Group Leaders within the Framework of Transcultural
Studies
The Heidelberg University Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in Global
Perspective: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows" brings together
scholars in East and South Asian, Middle Eastern and European Studies. To
further develop the transcultural and transdisciplinary research potential
of the Cluster and to strengthen its capabilities in handling transcultural
flows that cross linguistic, geographic, cultural and media borders, five
Junior Research Groups (JRG) will be established. These are in
Governance and Administration
Public Spheres
Health and Environment
Historicities and Heritage
Translingual Concepts and/or Transcultural Images
The Junior Research Groups overall focus will be on asymmetries in cultural
flows and their shifts. Each of the four Research Areas of the Cluster will
have one JRG, and a fifth will deal with linkages between them. For the

Each leader is to lead one JRG, which typically will have two to three other
members; is to be centrally involved in recruiting first class Ph.D.
candidates for the particular Group; is to define, manage, and monitor the
Group's project and sub-projects; will have the right to supervise Ph.D.
dissertations; and will integrate the Group into the overall framework of
the Cluster's activities. The work of the JRG will be regularly evaluated.
Candidates are expected to have their Ph.D. in hand; have a strong
publication record of high scholarly acumen with elements connected to the
Cluster's focus; have achieved international visibility within their field;
and have a proven record in both their work and their writing of pursuing
transcultural and transdisciplinary approaches. Fluency in English is
required.
Applications contain a C.V., a list of publications, a list of courses
taught, the names and contact data of two scholars who are familiar with
their work, and the proposal for a project to be carried out by the Junior
Research Group. This proposal may contain specific suggestions for the
personnel composition of the Research Group. Applications from junior
scholars with Asian backgrounds are strongly encouraged.

Scientific Coordinator/Graduate School Manager
The Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context.
Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows" at the University of
Heidelberg offers the position of a scientific coordinator/graduate
school manager starting March 1st 2008 for two years (with possibility
of extension).
The Graduate School for Transcultural Studies is part of the Cluster
of Excellence and provides a structured Ph.D. programme within the
transdisciplinary and transcultural research environment of the
Cluster. The school?s main location is the Karl Jaspers Centre (KJC),
situated at the University of Heidelberg.
The Graduate school manager will be responsible for administering and
recording admissions and progression of Ph.D. students enrolled in the
Graduate School for Transcultural Studies. He/she manages contacts
with the liaison offices in Delhi and Peking, and coordinates
arrangements for courses within the graduate programme. The applicant
must hold a Ph.D. and is invited to outline his/her research proposal
related to the agenda of the Cluster. For further information see the
