Bekenntnisse - Epoche

Konferenz unter der Schirmherrschaft der Stiftung der Familie
Raczyñski am Nationalmuseum Poznañ organisiert vom Nationalmuseum
Poznañ und dem Institut für Kunstgeschichte der
Adam-Mickiewicz-Universität in Poznañ, unter Mitwirkung des
Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Poznañ, 18. -20. September 2008

Die Grafen Eduard (1786-1845) und Athanasius (1788-1874) Raczyñski
gehörten zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der polnischen Aristokratie
ihrer Zeit. Sie entfalteten eine breite Tätigkeit als Förderer von Kultur
und Wissenschaft, engagierten sich zugleich jedoch auch als Politiker. In
einer Zeit tiefgreifender gesellschaftlicher und politischer Umbrüche
sowie unter der besonderen Situation der polnischen Teilung schöpften die
von den Brüdern oft gemeinsam in Angriff genommenen Initiativen ihre
Kraft und Begründung aus deren Überzeugung von der besonderen Rolle und
Pflicht des Adels. Aufgrund der Unterschiede in ihren politischen
Bekenntnissen, ihren Aktivitäten und ihren Vorlieben nahmen jedoch ihre
Lebenswege, die ihren gemeinsamen Ausgangspunkt im Familiensitz in
Rogalin hatten, einen unterschiedlichen Verlauf: Während Eduard sich zu
einer national polnischen Orientierung bekannte und seine Aktivität auf
Großpolen konzentrierte, repräsentierte Athanasius gegenüber dem
preußischen König eine Kompromisshaltung. Lange Zeit war er in Berlin und
als diplomatischer Gesandter des Preußischen Staates tätig. Die Forschung
zum Leben und Wirken der Brüder Raczyñski ist nach wie vor fragmentarisch
und teilt sich bisher in zwei separate Stränge. Es ist das Anliegen der
Konferenz, die Biografien beider Brüder einander anzunähern und sie
miteinander zu konfrontieren. Ferner soll das sie umgebende, überaus
interessante Feld von Fragestellungen umrissen und untersucht werden.
Hierin eröffnet sich ein besonderer Zugang zu der Vielschichtigkeit der
kulturellen, politisch-gesellschaftlichen und nationalen Prozesse im 19.
Jahrhundert. Wir möchten mit der Konferenz den an diesen Problemen
Interessierten die Gelegenheit bieten, ihre Forschungsergebnisse
darzulegen und zur Diskussion zu stellen. Es sollen darüber hinaus der
derzeitige Untersuchungsstand zu einzelnen Fragestellungen reflektiert
und die Notwendigkeit weiterer Forschungsperspektiven erörtert werden. Im
Zentrum unserer Aufmerksamkeit stehen die Aktivitäten beider Brüder auf
dem Gebiet des Mäzenatentums, so die Tätigkeit Eduards als Verleger sowie
als Initiator kultureller Stiftungen und Nationaldenkmäler und das
Schaffen Athanasius? als Kunsthistoriker, Sammler, Galeriegründer und
Inspirator für Künstler. Wir erwarten zudem Beiträge, die die politische
und diplomatische Tätigkeit Eduards und Athanasius? thematisieren Die
Bedeutung des Themas ist darin zu erkennen, dass sich im
?Raczyñski-Problem? weiter gefasste Fragestellungen und Forschungsgebiete
beispielhaft fokusieren lassen. Hierbei sei auf folgende Problemkomplexe
verwiesen: I. Formung (Familie, Tradition, Ausbildung,
Entscheidungsfelder, Persönlichkeiten); II. Verständnis von der Rolle der
Kultur; III. Das Los der Brüder in der Perspektive der
preußisch-polnischen Beziehungen; IV. persönliche Wege - ?intellektuelle
Biografien?; V. Leistungen und Erfolge.

Edward and Atanazy Raczyñski. works - personalities - choices - era

Conference under the auspices of The Raczyñski Foundation at the
National Museum in Poznañ
organised by The National Museum in Poznañ and The Institute of Art
History of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznañ with the collaboration
of The Art History Seminar of Humboldt University in Berlin

Poznañ, 18-20 September 2008

Edward (1786-1845) and Atanazy (1788-1874) Counts Raczyñski, eminent
representatives of Polish aristocracy of their day, were extensively
involved in the promotion of culture and science and were active
politicians. The initiatives that both brothers would frequently take up
together, drew on and were legitimised by the sense of the role and
obligation of nobility at a time of profound social and political
transformations under the special circumstances of a partitioned Poland.
At the same time their life-paths, begun in their native Rogalin,
diverged due to the differences of their political choices, areas of
activity, and passions: Edward, fostering Polish national identity, was
active in the province of Wielkopolska; Atanazy, representing a
compromising attitude towards the Prussian King, was for a long time
active in Berlin and on diplomatic missions of the Prussian state.
Studies concerning the lives and work of the Raczyñski brothers, still
fragmentary, have until now been conducted along two separate avenues.
The forthcoming conference is meant to be an attempt at converging and
confronting the biographies of the two brothers. It will try to map out
and recognise the relevant fields of intriguing issues, facilitating a
unique access to various manifestations of the dynamics of the cultural,
socio-political, and national processes of the 19th century. We expect
the conference to provide an opportunity for a presentation and
discussion of research of scientists interested in the subject matter. If
will also offer a chance for an evaluation of the state of advancement of
studies of particular questions and of the perspectives and needs for
their continuation. The focal point will be the uniqueness of the
activity of both brothers as patrons of the arts; Edward - was a
publisher and initiator of foundations of a cultural and national
character, with special emphasis on national monuments, Atanazy - was an
art historian and collector who inspired artists and founded a gallery.
We expect papers concerning their political and diplomatic activity,
presentations of studies on a diverse range of topics and with various
degrees of detailedness. We see the attractiveness and significance of
the subject matter in the fact that the ?Raczyñski question? involves
broad issues and research fields, such as the following: I. Formation
(family, tradition, education, personality, zone of choice); II.
Perception of the role of culture; III. The biographies of the brothers
in the perspective of Polish-Prussian relations; IV. Personal life-paths
- ?intellectual biographies?; V. Achievements.
