The Melton Prior Institute provides the basis for an internationally oriented
research on the history of reportage drawing. It presently consists of an
emerging collection of original drawings, prints and portfolios by relevant
artists and on a variety of topics, as well as of an extensive library
stressing documentation of graphic reporting in the early stages of pictorial
press publishing
The Melton Prior Institute publishes in irregular intervals. Those interested
in receiving its newsletter can subscribe to the Institute's mailing list
All hints, even remotely related to the subject of graphic reportage, are
most welcome
The library and the collection of the Institute are open on appointment for
all persons seriously interested, if applicable on presentation of their
respective research project.

Update Van Goghs Favourites I : Hubert Herkomer

Hubert Herkomer und die Schule des englischen Sozialrealismus

Im Unterschied zu dem bereits verstorbenen Jean-Francois Millet war
Van Goghs zweites großes künstlerisches Vorbild Hubert Herkomer ein
Generationsgenosse, dessen Werdegang eine konkrete Projektionsfläche
für den lernbegierigen Späteinsteiger bieten konnte. Der nur drei
Jahre ältere Herkomer hatte zu dem Zeitpunkt, als Van Gogh sich
gerade für eine künstlerische Laufbahn zu entscheiden begonnen hatte,
bereits eine viel beachtete Entwicklung vom Londoner
Illustriertenzeichner zum international erfolgreichen Malerstar

Die Serie von 19 Gouachen in der Sammlung des MePri stammt aus
aufgelösten Archivbeständen des "Vogtländischen Anzeigers". Sie zeigt
in sehr anschaulicher Weise den Schützengrabenalltag einer deutschen
Einheit, die 1914 - 16 in Westflandern stationiert war. Von der
neuartigen perfiden Qualität der Kriegsführung, die im April 1915
durch den ersten großflächigen Einsatz von Giftgas im belgischen
Kriegsgebiet von deutscher Seite aus losbrach, findet sich in der
Bilderfolge allerdings kein Hinweis.

Hubert Herkomer and the School of English Social Realism

Unlike the already deceased Jean-Francois Millet, Van Gogh's second
great artistic model, Hubert Herkomer, belonged to his own
generation. Herkomer's career offered a concrete projection screen
for the late entrant who was eager to learn. Only three years his
senior, Herkomer, at the time during which Van Gogh just decided to
start a career as an artist, had already undergone a remarkable
development, from a London-based illustrated journal draughtsman to
an internationally successful star painter. (...)

This series of 19 gouaches from the collection of the MePri comes
from the disbanded archival inventories of the "Vogtländischer
Anzeiger", a German newspaper dating back to the last turn of the
century. It very vividly depicts everyday in the trenches as
experienced by a German unit positioned in West Flanders between
1914-16. Interestingly, there is no trace in this image sequence that
might tell of the novel perfidiousness of warfare introduced in April
1915 with the first extensive use the Germans made of toxic gas in
the Belgian warzone.
