[1] Smithsonian American Art Museum Fellowships 2007-2008

Since 1970, the museum has hosted nearly 300 scholars who now occupy
positions in academic and cultural institutions across the United States.
Fellowship opportunities available at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
include the Terra Foundation for American Art Fellowships for the
cross-cultural study of art of the United States; the Patricia and Phillip
Frost Fellowship for research in American art and visual culture; the
Wyeth Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship for the study of the traditions of
American art; the Sara Roby Fellowship in American Realism; the Douglass
Foundation Fellowship in American art; and the James Renwick Fellowship in
American Craft. The museum also hosts fellows supported by the
Smithsonian's general fellowship fund.

Research resources at the museum include extensive photographic
collections documenting American art and artists and unparalleled art
research databases. An estimated 180,000-volume library specializing in
American art, history and biography is shared with the Smithsonian's
National Portrait Gallery. An active publications program of books,
catalogs and the critically acclaimed journal "American Art" complements
the museum's exhibitions and educational programs.

[2] The International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at
Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, invites international
applications for up to 5 PhD fellowships.

The International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at
Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, invites international
applications for PhD fellowships. Due to generous support from the German
Research Foundation (DFG), the GCSC can offer in 2007 up to 5 PhD fellowships.

The GCSC encourages applicants who have graduated with excellent marks
from their home universities in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects or in
cultural studies. Applications from the areas of Medieval and Early Modern
History and Literature, Modern and Contemporary History, Art History,
Romance Studies, Slavic Studies and Linguistics are especially encouraged.
The proposed research project should fit into one of the GCSC’s research
areas
.
Candidates must have fluency in either English or German.

PhD candidates seeking an excellent research environment will find ideal
conditions and maximum support at the GCSC, which was awarded the status
of a ‘DFG - Graduate School of Germany's Excellence Initiative’ in 2006.
The PhD fellowships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1.000 and
are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a
year. They start on October 15th, 2007.

Acceptance of a fellowship requires participation in the study programme
and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active
involvement in the relevant GCSC graduate research group. PhD fellowship
holders must be registered as PhD students at Justus Liebig University and
are expected to take up residence in or near Giessen. PhD supervisors from
among the GCSC faculty may be chosen by the applicants before or after
their admission. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU,
except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester.

• a short CV
• copies of all degree certificates
• a research proposal of no more than 10 pages
• a realistic time-plan for the completion of your project
• two references from university teachers
• a copy of the degree/master’s thesis

degree thesis)

[3] Robert Bosch Regional Fellowships

The New Europe College, an Institute for Advanced Study in Bucharest,
invites applications for one-term Fellowships in Spring - Summer 2008
(from March through July, 2008)

The two Fellowships shall enable young outstanding researchers - social
scientists and humanities scholars - or academics from the Balkan region
to pursue their work in Bucharest, with the support of a decent stipend
and benefiting from the institute's excellent infrastructure and in its
stimulating multidisciplinary atmosphere. Fellows are expected to stay in
residence at the New Europe College in Bucharest and to participate in the
academic program of this vital Romanian centre of research and debate. For

Eligible are scholars (doctoral or post-doctoral level) from the West
Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR Macedonia,
Montenegro, and Serbia. Preference is given to applicants below 45 years.
A good command of English is desirable; fluency in other foreign languages
(French, German) an advantage.

Successful candidates receive a monthly stipend of 600 Euro for four
months. The Fellowships also include accommodation, travel costs for
Bucharest, and a research allowance. Additionally, Fellows are offered a
lump sum of 2560 Euros for a one-month research trip to a German institution.

The Fellowships are sponsored by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, Stuttgart
(Germany).

Applications must use the forms provided on the New Europe College website
(www.nec.ro), and also contain a CV (with publications) and a well-written
research proposal (3-5 pages) for the period in question. Applications
that satisfy the formal requirements will be considered by an
international jury (including representatives of the New Europe College
and members of its Boards).

Successful candidates will be notified by the end of November, at latest.

[4] Research Fellowship in Museum Anthropology New York

The Bard Graduate Center and the American Museum of Natural History
announce a Research Fellowship in Museum Anthropology. The fellowship
provides support to a postdoctoral investigator to pursue a project in
association with a curator in the Division of Anthropology at the American
Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

We especially encourage those with an interest in the ethnology of the
Northwest Coast of North America or Franz Boas to apply. The Fellow will
also be expected to teach one graduate-level course per year at the Bard
Graduate Center (BGC). The Fellow will thus be in joint residence at BGC
and AMNH. The fellowship includes free housing.

The deadline for application is 15 November 2007. Applications are not

[5] 2008 OAH Avery O. Craven Award New York

2008 MERLE CURTI AWARD

The Merle Curti Award is given annually for the best book in social,
intellectual, and/or cultural history. The committee may decide to give
the award to two books, one in social history and one in intellectual history.

Each entry must be published during the period January 1, 2007 through
December 31, 2007. One copy of each entry must be received by each
committee member by October 1, 2007. Final page proofs may be used for
books to be published after October 1, 2007 and before January 1, 2008. If
a final page proof is submitted, a bound copy of the entry must be
received no later than January 7, 2008. No late submissions will be
accepted. If a book carries a copyright date that is different from the
publication date, but the actual publication date falls during the correct
time frame making it eligible, please include a letter of explanation with
each copy of the book sent to committee members.

The author of the winning book will receive $2,000 (or $1,000 should two
books be selected). The publisher of the book will be honored with a
certificate of merit. The award will be presented at the 2008 annual
meeting of the OAH in New York, New York, March 28-31. One copy of each
entry, clearly labeled "2008 Merle Curti Award Entry," must be mailed
