Graduate Essay Prize


Unique in both range and approach, History Compass is an online-only
journal publishing peer-reviewed survey articles from across the
discipline, spanning both centuries and continents.

The editors of History Compass invite submissions for the 2007 Graduate
Essay Prize.

Each winner will receive $200/£100 worth of free Blackwell books and
have their article published in History Compass journal!

There will be a prize-winning graduate essay for each of the 9 sections
on History Compass:


• Africa
• Asia
• Australasia & Pacific
• Britain & Ireland
• Caribbean & Latin America
• Europe
• Middle & Near East
• North America
• World

Deadline: 15 October, 2007.


Guidelines

 

The prize is open to all graduate students engaged in study at a college
or university after their first degree and having not yet completed
their doctorate.

Those entering either competition can choose their own topic, though
this should be fairly broad. The style of submitted articles should be
consistent with other published articles on the sites, that is: they
should have a wide scope, be written for non-specialists to acquire an
introduction into new fields, and adopt a review or historiographical
approach.

The upper word limit is 5000 words, including abstract, footnotes and
bibliography.

History Compass Graduate Essays should be submitted by email as a Word
document to: HICOeditorial@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com


Graduates must specify:

* which section they are entering their essay for

* provide the details of their affiliation

* provide their supervisor's name and email address

History Compass Graduate Essay Prize - Terms & Conditions

1. Please email your essay to
HICOeditorial@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com. All essays must specify
which section they are entering for, the author’s name, address and
phone number, their affiliation and their supervisor’s name and email
address. Entries must be received no later than September 1st 2006.

2. The maximum word limit for each essay is 5000 words, including
endnotes and bibliography. Essays can be on any topic related to the
study of history, but should contain a survey element, putting the
chosen topic in context for the non-specialist.

3. Each section winner will receive books published by Blackwell
Publishing of the section winner’s choice upto the value of $200/£100.
Each section winner will have their article published on History Compass.

4. One section winner will be chosen for each of the nine sections on
History Compass. Each section winner will be chosen by a Review Panel
for each section consisting of the relevant Editor(s) and three
Editorial Board members. Winners will be announced at the 2007 AHA
Conference and all winners will be notified by email no later than
January 31st 2007.

5. The prize is open to all graduate students engaged in study at a
college or university after their first degree and having not yet
completed their doctorate. Only one entry per person. Entries sent in
through agents or third parties will not be entered into the graduate
prize.

6. The prize is subject to availability. Blackwell Publishing reserves
the right to substitute a prize of equivalent or greater value if this
is necessary for reasons beyond its control. No cash alternative will be
offered for any prize.

7. A list of prize winners may be obtained by written request by sending
an email to the above address on or before January 31st 2007.

8. Blackwell Publishing’s decision is final and no correspondence will
be entered into. Entries that do not comply in full with these rules may
be disqualified.

9. Blackwell Publishing reserves the right to alter, amend or foreclose
this History Compass Graduate Essay Prize without prior notice in the
event that unforeseen circumstances make this unavoidable. The Promoter
