invites proposals for both a six month
and a one-year research project on present-day encyclopaedic works on any
aspect of Muslim cultures. Candidates with a PhD from any area of the
Humanities or Social Sciences will be invited to take a comparative
perspective with an emphasis on present-day Muslim cultures. While any such
work as a focus of the research is welcome, preference is given to projects
that centre on current challenges in the Muslim world. The six month
fellowship is expected to be awarded to candidates who have received their
PhD within the last four years, with preference being given to senior
faculty for the 1 Year fellowship.
The duties of the fellow are fourfold:
1. (For the 1 Year Fellowship) to pursue research exercise that explores
encyclopaedic projects in one of the following three major fields: social
dimensions, epistemological frameworks, impact on the public sphere; (For
the 6 Month Fellowship) to pursue a research that explores one or more
encyclopaedic projects with the aim to prepare a major project proposal to a
grant giving agency;
2. to present a work-in-progress paper in AKU-ISMC's research seminar;
3. (For the 1 Year Fellowship) to contribute a paper to the conference on
encyclopaedic works on Muslim cultures (20th-21st centuries) that will be
held by AKU-ISMC in Autumn 2007; (For the 6 Month Fellowship) to participate
in the preparation of the conference on encyclopaedic works on Muslim
cultures (20th-21st centuries) that will be held by AKU-ISMC in Autumn 2007;
4. (For the 1 Year Fellowship) to write one research paper within the
framework of the project and submit it to a peer-reviewed journal. (For the
6 Month Fellowship) to contribute a paper to the conference on contemporary
encyclopaedic works on Muslim cultures.
The 1 Year fellow will be appointed to AKU-ISMC for the year 2007 (January
to December). The fellowship stipend is £24,000 pa. In addition to the
stipend, the fellow will be allocated up to £1,200 travel allowance
including relocation costs, £500 research budget, office space, access to
AKU-ISMC's library and libraries of neighbouring academic institutions, and
access to computer facilities if needed.
The 6 Month fellow will be appointed to AKU-ISMC for six months within the
academic year 2006-2007. The fellowship stipend will range between £10,200
and £12,000, depending on the candidate's academic standing. In addition to
the stipend, the fellow will be allocated up to £1,000 travel allowance
including relocation costs, £250 research budget, office space, access to
AKU-ISMC's library and libraries of neighbouring academic institutions, and
access to computer facilities if needed.
AKU-ISMC is an EO employer. Deadline for the application is 30 November 2006

Museums, Galleries & Collections Institute

The post is for 6 months, starting on as soon as possible. The Museums,
Galleries and Collections Institute (MGCI) has been awarded a grant by the
Scottish Funding Council to assess the feasibility of a sustainable research
network bringing together researchers working on Scottish collections from
universities, museums and galleries and other heritage agencies, and in
particular to:
Examine the feasibility of using MGCI to set up sustainable collections
research networks for Scotland, bringing together museums, galleries,
heritage agencies such as NTS and Historic Scotland, expert amateurs and the
higher education community.
Examine possible models and structures for the network including
virtual networks through the WWW
We are seeking an experienced researcher who has knowledge of the museum and
gallery sector and of the higher education sector; the ability to establish
and maintain contacts with wide variety of organisations and professionals;
run meetings and facilitate discussions efficiently; undertake
consultations, formulate questionnaires and analyse and evaluate results.
