Call for Proposals
Conference:
"The Map and the World: Visions of the Buddhist Universe"
June 22, 2007
National Museum
Na Phra That Road
Bangkok, Thailand
Maps, text, and architecture render visible aspects of a Buddhist realm.
Papers are invited from those working in religion, history, art, and
cartography that re-examine images of the universe through the lens of
Buddhist cosmology. Topics on these and other forms expressive of Buddhist
spatial concepts will be considered; also welcomed are papers that elucidate
effects of contact with non-Buddhist forms and perspectives. Papers are
invited addressing examples from throughout the Buddhist world.
Conference organizers seek to take advantage of the unprecedented access to
text, map, and image provided by digital technologies such as on-line
databases, virtual reality, and geographic information systems. Materials
related to conference themes will be compiled for use at the conference, in
follow up workshops, and annotated distribution as educational resources.
Proposals of up to 300 words, together with CV, email, address, phone, and
fax information, should be sent by email to Program Co-chairs at the
