CALL FOR PAPERS
University College of the Fraser Valley is proud to host, in association
with BC Studies and the People of the River Conference, an International
Conference on
British Columbia: Inner and Outer Worlds
April 27-29, 2007 at Harrison Hot Springs
This interdisciplinary conference will be a venue for exploring different
and diverse manifestations of British Columbia or of British Columbians, not
only internally, but also externally. We invite proposals from all areas of
research involving British Columbia.Papers or panels with a comparative or
transnational focus are encouraged.
The conference themes might be articulated as, but are not limited to, the
following:
Outer Worlds of British Columbia as:
- an outpost of Empire
- a continental entity
- a western Canadian region
- a part of the Pacific Northwest
- a Pacific entity
- a resident of the Global Village
- an ecosystem
Inner Worlds of British Columbia as:
- an Aboriginal space
- a gendered environment
- a hierarchical community
- a racialised landscape
- a spiritual / intellectual idea
- as visual representation
- a cultural negotiation
- an urban / rural dichotomy
The conference will also include crossover sessions and social activity with
the concurrent People of the River Conference hosted by Sto:lo Nation in
Chilliwack.
Individual paper proposals should include an abstract (250 words maximum)
and one page curriculum vitae. Panel proposals should include an overall
description of the theme for the session, as well as abstracts for each of
the papers and a curriculum vitae for each of the participants /
commentators.Correspondence may be in either English or French.Proposals can
be submitted electronically, by fax or by mail.
Subject to funding, efforts will be made to supply limited travel assistance
to presenters. First priority for financial support will be given to
students and unaffiliated scholars on a case by case basis.
