Forgotten Surrealists: Belgian Surrealism Since 1924

P. Allmer & J. Sears

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Forgotten Surrealists: Belgian Surrealism Since 1924

deadline: September 1st 2005.

Image & Narrative. Online Magazine of the Visual Narrative,
www.imageandnarrative.be, a bilingual French/English journal, invites
submissions for a special issue on Belgian Surrealism.

Despite the current academic interest in Surrealisms as such, Belgian
Surrealism has not yet been fully explored and has not received its
deserved attention, particularly in Anglo-American academia. Although there
are a number of interesting publications in French, Anglo-American writing,
with the possible exception of the Magritte: Catalogue Raisonnés published
from 1992 - 94, has not yet focused its full attention on Belgian
Surrealism. This year's Association of Art Historians session initiated
fruitful discussions of Belgian Surrealism, which will be developed with a
special issue of Image & Narrative (www.imageandnarrative.be).

The special issue of Image & Narrative will be dedicated to the exploration
of the intricate and diverse characteristics of Belgian Surrealism.
Articles are invited which focus on any aspect of the movement - ranging
from individual artists to historical contextualisations. What are the
specific features of Belgian Surrealism? How does it relate to and differ
from other Surrealisms and other avant-garde movements (for example
Dadaism, Lettrism, Situationism, Cobra)? How did diasporas and differences
influence and develop Belgian Surrealism, and what are its resonances in
the present?

Articles to be considered by the editors of Image & Narrative should be
sent as electronic copies to the guest editor, Patricia Allmer
(searsallmer.fsnet.co.uk).

In addition an electronic and a paper copy should be sent to the Image &
Narrative editorial address:

Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography and Visual Studies
University of Leuven
Arts Faculty
Blijde-Inkomststraat 21
B-3000 Leuven

Jan Baetens (Editor of I & N), Jan.Baetensarts.kuleuven.ac.be, K.U.Leuven
Hilde Van Gelder (Editor of I & N), Hilde.VanGelderarts.kuleuven.ac.be,
K.U.Leuven.

The length of required submissions should not exceed 4000 words and
articles should be written in English. MLA conventions are followed and any
images with copyright issues are the author's responsibility.

The deadline for submissions is September 1st 2005.
