The MA and PhD Programs in Architectural History that are offered at METU
aim to promote the production of knowledge and documentation on different
periods and areas of the history of architectural culture and built
environment through original research with an inter-cultural, contextual and
multi-disciplinary approach; to provide training on past and present
architectural developments and on relevant research methods in the field,
and by doing so, to train experts equipped with the requisite general
knowledge, analytical skills and initiative to undertake duties at academic
institutions, research centers and state institutions as architectural
historians; to disseminate the knowledge of architectural history of Turkey
in both the national milieu and the world at large; and to assume an active
role in the institutionalization of architectural history in Turkey.
Research interests and disciplinary backgrounds of the staff cover various
fields of history and theory of art and architecture. The program is offered
within the METU Faculty of Architecture but is also integrated with the METU
Institute of Social Sciences and shaped by the concerns of the humanities.
There is no disciplinary limitation for the applicants, but applications
from the graduates of architecture and related fields in the fine arts,
humanities and social sciences are especially invited. Applicants from all
fields are required to demonstrate their interest in architectural history
through transcripts, satisfactory performance in entrance examinations and a
portfolio (optional). As the medium of instruction is English, proficiency
