SAAAH 21st Annual Conference: Call for Papers
Rhodes University, Grahamstown
8 - 11 September 2005

New readings of visual culture in Southern Africa

The 21st annual conference of the South African Association of Art and
Architectural Historians (SAAAH) will be hosted at Rhodes University in
Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

It will begin with a welcoming event on the evening of 8 September, papers
will be presented on 9 and 10 September, and it will end with
post-conference tours on Sunday 11 September. Please plan to stay for
these tours, which will enable delegates to experience aspects of the
fascinating visual culture in the region. More details will follow.

The theme for the conference is New readings of visual culture in Southern
Africa. We have chosen the term visual culture to embrace varied areas of
interest. In addition to papers on what we conventionally define as fine
art, we will welcome those that explore such topics as architecture,
popular culture, photography and heritage sites.

Proposals should include a title for your paper and be between 150 and 300
words in length. Please send these along with your details (postal address,
affiliation, telephone numbers) by Friday 11 March 2005 to Brenda
Schmahmann at B.Schmahmannru.ac.za. Please note that participation is not
limited to members of SAAAH.

The annual conference of the South African Association of Art and
Architectural Historians caters mostly for South Africans, but
international delegates would be really welcome as well. Participation is
not limited to members of SAAAH.
