Nineteenth century topographic photography of/in Maastricht in an
European perspective

General
In the course of the 19th century the City explicitly becomes the object
of a new policy (urbanism), of a new practice (tourism), of a new type
of intervention (restoration), of a new description (patrimony).
Moreover, a new technology has surfaced: photography, which elicits new
aspects from the city in direct relation to: urbanism, tourism,
restoration and the patrimonial monument. This role of photography is
the object of research in a research project supported by the Jan van
Eyck, initiated by the Belgian senior researcher Dirk Lauwaert. The
general thesis was worked out in more detail and publicly presented
during two workshops held in May 2002 in Maastricht (Jan van Eyck
Academie) and in October 2002 in Bruges (on the occasion of Bruges being
Cultural Capital of Europe). As a consequence of these events a
symposium will take place on a selection of 19th century city images of
Maastricht.

The 19th century photographic images of the Maastricht city walls from a
historic and European perspective.
The recorded images of the demolition of part of the city walls of
Maastricht, which are housed in the City Archives of Maastricht, have
not yet been attributed to any specific photographer. It is also unknown
who commissioned them, or what their purpose was. The symposium takes
this group of images as its point of departure. During the symposium the
context of the demolition of the city walls is outlined.

The following issues will be treated:
- What is the role of the urbanistic 'rationale' of the city walls and
gates in the historic identity of European cities? What is at stake
when, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th
century, decisions were made to either demolish or preserve city walls?
- Within which city plans for city development was a choice made for
partial demolition? How did local and national authorities react to this
intervention?
- How do the images of the city walls and the demolition of these walls
in various European cities relate to each other?
- How were the city walls together with the gates visualized in
engravings? Which other accents would photographers later add to this
image conceptualization?

Algemeen
De stad wordt in de loop van de 19de eeuw expliciet het object van een
nieuw beleid (urbanisme), van een nieuwe praktijk (toerisme), van een
nieuw soort interventie (restauratie), van een nieuwe omschrijving
(patrimonium). Bovendien is er een nieuwe techniek, de fotografie, die
de stad nieuwe aspecten ontlokt, in directe relatie tot: urbanisme,
toerisme, restauratie en het patrimoniale monument. Die rol van de
fotografie is het object van onderzoek in een door de Jan van Eyck
ondersteund onderzoeksproject, geïnitieerd door de Belgische senior
researcher Dirk Lauwaert. De algemene probleemstelling is nader
uitgewerkt en publiek gepresenteerd tijdens twee workshops in mei 2002
in Maastricht (Jan van Eyck Academie) en in oktober 2002 in Brugge (naar
aanleiding van Brugge Culturele Hoofdstad).
De 19de-eeuwse fotografische beelden van de Maastrichtse stadsomwalling
vanuit historisch en Europees perspectief
De opnames van de afbraak van een deel van de omwalling van Maastricht
die zich in het Gemeentearchief van Maastricht bevinden, zijn voorlopig
aan geen enkele fotograaf toegeschreven. Er is ook niet bekend in wiens
opdracht ze gemaakt werden, noch wat hun bestemming was. Het symposium
neemt deze groep beelden als uitgangspunt. Tijdens het symposium wordt
de context van de afbraak van de omwalling geschetst.

De volgende vragen komen aan de orde:
- Wat is de rol van het urbanistiek 'motief' van de omwalling en poorten
in de historische identiteit van Europese steden? Wat staat er dus op
het spel wanneer op het einde van de 19de eeuw en het begin van de
twintigste eeuw tot afbraak of tot behoud besloten werd?
- Binnen welke gemeentelijke plannen voor de stadsontwikkeling werd er
besloten tot gedeeltelijke afbraak? Hoe reageerden lokale en nationale
autoriteiten op deze ingreep?
- Hoe verhouden de beelden van de omwallingen en de afbraak van deze
omwallingen in diverse Europese steden zich tot elkaar?
- Hoe werd de omwalling samen met de poorten in gravures gevisualiseerd?
Welke andere accenten bracht de fotografie later in die beeldvorming aan?
