Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies

Types of Fellowships/Grants Offered: Dissertation / Post-Doctoral

This program is administered by the Council and based at the Freie
Universität Berlin which also funds the program. United States
administrative costs and selected Postdoctoral fellows are funded by the
National Endowment for the Humanities. The Program's purpose is to encourage
the comparative and interdisciplinary study of the economic, political and
social aspects of modern and contemporary German and European affairs. The
Program supports anthropologists, economists, political scientists,
sociologists and all scholars in germane social science and cultural studies
fields, including historians working on the period since the mid-19th
century.

National Endowment for the Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowships

The National Endowment for the Humanities provides support for select
postdoctoral fellows of the Berlin Program. The NEH postdoctoral award is
open to PhDs at all levels who are citizens or permanent residents of the
United States. Applicants eligible for the NEH award must fill out the same
application for the SSRC Freie Universitat Berlin fellowship and will be
considered in the same applicant pool. Recipients of this award must also
participate in the bi-weekly seminars at the Freie Universitat Berlin.

The SSRC National Endowment for the Humanities Postdoctoral award allows for
a stipend of $30,000 to be used for living and research expenses during each
fellow’s stay in Berlin (between 10-12 months).

The Berlin Program

Eligibility

Citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada are
eligible to apply. At the dissertation level, applicants must have completed
all requirements (except the dissertation) for the PhD at the time the
fellowship begins.

At the postdoctoral level, the Program is open to scholars who have received
the PhD degree or its equivalent in the last two years.

Fellows are expected to produce a research monograph (doctoral dissertation,
book manuscript) dealing with some aspect of German or European studies,
including US-European relations. Awards are for a minimum of 10 and a
maximum of 12 months. Fellows participate in the Program's seminars twice
monthly and present their work alongside senior scholars in Berlin.

The Berlin Program Fellowship stipends are EUR 1100 per month for fellows
working on a dissertation project and EUR 1400 per month for fellows working
on a postdoctoral research project. The Program offers fellows EUR 130 per
month for each accompanying child and EUR 130 per month as spousal support
if the spouse is not working or is on a fellowship. The Program provides one
round-trip airfare for the fellow between the fellow’s residence at the time
of award and Berlin. Awards provide between ten and twelve months of
research support. In addition, funds for intra-European research travel may
be granted upon request.
