A One-Day Symposium on ‘Sculpture and the Pedestal’
to be held at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London
10 June 2003

www.courtauld.ac.uk/sub_index/conferences_events/scul_ped/sculpturepedestal.html

The symposium will examine the relationship of pedestal to sculpture in
public spaces and in the display of sculpture in private and public
collections.

It follows from the success of a similar symposium at Reading University
last January where Alex Potts, Malcolm Baker, Alison Yarrington and Philip
Ward-Jackson were among those who presented papers.

The symposium will be an opportunity for researchers and curators to
discuss this issue together and across periods.

Caroline Arscott (Courtauld Institute of Art) will chair the symposium.

Speakers:

Peter Stewart (Courtauld Institute of Art) ‘Roman Bases and their Statues’

Phillip Lindley (Leicester) ‘Medieval sculptures and contemporary display
strategies: reflections on Image and Idol’

Victoria Avery (Cambridge) ‘Patrons, Promotion and Publicity in Venice:
How Alessandro Vittoria used Pedestals in His Work (c.1550-1600)’

Charlotte Chastel-Rousseau (Paris I, Sorbonne) ‘Protection or Elevation?
The Function of Pedestals in British Royal Public Monuments, 1660-1820’

Sarah Crellin (Independent) ‘That's the way to do it: peeps at sculpture
and pedestals in Punch from 1841’

David Getsy (Dartmouth College) ‘Fallen Women: Gender and Horizontality in
Epstein and Giacometti’

Following the symposium there will be a talk given by Johanna Darke (PMSA)
entitled ‘The Saga of the Empty Plinth in Trafalgar Square’
