Gastvorträge und Podiumsdiskussion zur Ausstellung «Das Wunder im Schnee – Pieter Bruegel der Ältere» in der Sammlung Oskar Reinhart «Am Römerholz», Winterthur am Samstag, den 22. Februar 2020 um 17 Uhr

Die kleine Tafel Pieter Bruegels Die Anbetung der Heiligen Drei Könige im Schnee von 1563 steht im Zentrum der Sonderausstellung der Sammlung Oskar Reinhart «Am Römerholz». Das Gemälde ist nicht nur die älteste erhaltene Winterlandschaft des Künstlers, sondern auch das erste Gemälde der europäischen Kunst mit fallenden Schneeflocken. Der Ausstellung vorangegangen sind aufwändige technologische und bildgebende Untersuchungen des Werkes, welche in Kooperation mit dem Kunsthistorischen Museum Wien und einem internationalen Forscherkreis erfolgten.
Die aktuellen Untersuchungen ergaben nicht nur neue Erkenntnisse über die Auswahl von Materialien und Techniken, sondern auch konkrete Hinweise zum Entstehungsprozess des Meisterwerks. Bruegels innovative Pinselführung macht die Anbetung der Heiligen Drei Könige im Schnee einzigartig. Die Vorträge der beiden ausgewiesenen Bruegelexpertinnen sowie die anschliessende Podiumsdiskussion präsentieren die Forschungsergebnisse und erläutern die herausragende Qualität des Werkes anhand von Beispielen der bildtechnologischen Untersuchungen.

Dr. Dominique Allart ist Professorin an der Université de Liège, Belgien wo sie das Institut für Kunstgeschichte und Kunsttechnologie leitet. Darüber hinaus ist sie für die universitätseigene graphische Sammlung von Altmeistern verantwortlich. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Kunst des 16. Jahrhunderts, besonders der ehemaligen Niederlande und des Fürstbistums Lüttich. Neben den Zeichnungen und Gemälden des Künstlers und Antiquars Lambert Lombard, hat sie sich auf die Werke Pieter Bruegels des Älteren und seiner Söhne spezialisiert.

Dr. Christina Currie ist Leiterin der Scientific Imagery im Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brüssel, Belgien und auf die technologische Untersuchung von Gemälden spezialisiert. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Brueg(h)el Familie, insbesondere Pieter Bruegel dem Älteren und Pieter Brueghel dem Jüngeren. Sie publizierte u.a. zu den Werken von Melchior Broederlam, Jan van Eyck, Herri met de Bles, Tintoretto, Marten de Vos, Artemisia Gentileschi sowie Thomas Eakins. Von 2014 bis 2019 leitete sie darüber hinaus die technologischen Untersuchungen des «Van Eyck Research in Open Access» Projektes.

Dr. Katja Baumhoff ist Stv. Leiterin der Sammlung Oskar Reinhart und Co-Autorin des Katalogs "Das Wunder im Schnee - Pieter Bruegel der Ältere".

The Making of a Masterpiece

Lectures and Round-Table on the occasion of the exhibition ’The Miracle in the Snow – Pieter Bruegel the Elder’ at the Oskar Reinhart Collection ’Am Römerholz’, Winterthur at Saturday, 22. February 2020 at 5 pm.
Pieter Bruegel’s small panel painting of the Adoration of the Kings in the Snow (1563) – his only painting in Switzerland and the first painting in European art that captured falling snowflakes - is the focus of the exhibition at the Oskar Reinhart Collection. The exhibition has been preceded by detailed examinations of the painting, partly resulting in new, revealing images, in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien and international experts. The technical study of the Adoration of the Kings in the Snow reveals new information about Bruegel’s choice of material and techniques.

Dominique Allart: Bruegel’s Adoration of the Kings in the Snow – A Landmark in the History of Landscape Painting This lecture will trace the history of winter landscape in early modern Western art. In his incomparable masterpieces depicting snowy landscapes, Bruegel explored subtle painterly effects to capture the wintry atmosphere and pioneered a new kind of sensitivity, which would immediately gain much success, especially in the Low Countries.

Dominique Allart is a full Professor at the University of Liège, where she heads the Department of Art History and Technology of Fine Arts (Modern Times). Her research addresses the arts of the sixteenth century, especially in the former Low Countries and the Principality of Liège. As well as the drawings and paintings of the artist and antiquarian Lambert Lombard, she specializes in the study of paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his sons.

Christina Currie: The Adoration of the Kings in the Snow – The Making of a Masterpiece This talk will give a behind-the-surface glimpse into Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s creative process in the Adoration of the Kings. It will reveal the careful planning behind the seemingly spontanous paint layer, using clues from the painting itself and from the many copies of the composition. It will also compare Bruegel’s approach in the Adoration with that in his other iconic winter scene, the Winter Landscape with Bird Trap.

Christina Currie is Head of Scientific Imagery at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels, specialising in the technical examination of paintings. Her main field of research is the Brueg(h)el family, notably Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Pieter Brueghel the Younger, but also copies by Jan Brueghel the Elder. From 2014-2019, she managed the scientific imagery for the Van Eyck Research in Open Access (VERONA) project.

Katja Baumhoff is Deputy director of the Oskar Reinhart Collection and co-author of the publication "The Miracle in the Snow - Pieter Bruegel the Elder".
