Guest editor Verónica Uribe Hanabergh, PhD.
Associate professor, Departamento de Historia del Arte, Facultad de Artes y Humanidades, Universidad de los Andes, Colombia.

H-ART. Revista de historia, teoría y crítica de arte will be receiving articles for the dossier “Colombia, 19th century: travel, exchanges and other forms of circulation” from October 7th 2019 to January 10th 2020.

This dossier seeks contributions in the Art History discipline that are unpublished, new or that were presented at the Simposio Internacional Colombia siglo XIX (Universidad de los Andes, April 2019). The topic of the dossier aims to bring together specialists and scholars in Colombian 19th century to examine, from Art History but with an interdisciplinary approach, the impact of circulation of ideas, knowledge, people and objects in the cultural, political and social processes. The dossier will be open to proposals that examine the geo-temporal scenario from the broad framework of circulation, exchange and travel.

The Simposio Internacional Colombia siglo XIX was held in the year of the Bicentenary of the Independence and it gathered important national and international scholars that have dedicated their academic work to the study of the 19th century in Colombia. Although the framework of the presentations was not restricted by the two hundred years, it invited to make profound reflections from a variety of disciplines, topics, approaches and relevant questions to understand Colombia nowadays. As a foundational stage of the Republic and its consolidation as a modern nation, the 19th century, with its contradictions and peculiarities, presents essential challenges in the academic field and outside of it. Thus, it asks us to reflect on current issues related to: the transnational, gender-related matters, populations, discussions about territory, landscape and ecology, migrations, capitalism, collectionism and artistic production, among many others that intersect and propose new approaches to that century.

The dossier’s goal is to share the result of research, new perspectives and methodologies that show the importance and relevance on the study of the 19th century in Colombia today. There are exhibition, publications and recent projects that, in the light of the commemoration of outstanding dates that surround the Independence processes and the establishment of the Republic, are the result of new approaches to the “long 19th century”.

We invite the submission of articles that are the product of research that relates with these issues, either through the analysis of specific examples or through theoretical reflections. To learn about the journal editorial policies visit:
