Stoff der Protestanten: Textilien und Kleidung in den lutherischen und reformierten Konfessionen
Internationale Tagung

Die Tagung steht auf dem Schnittpunkt von Konfessions- sowie Textil- und Kleidungsforschung und vereint Gebiete, die erst ansatzweise zusammengeführt wurden.
Die vielgestaltige Textilkunde hat in den letzten Jahren zu beachtlichen Erkenntnissen geführt und etwa die vielschichtige Interdependenz von textiler Kultur und Theologie im Kontext der Frömmigkeit des Mittelalters herausgearbeitet. Auch die Erforschung von Bildern der Reformation und der Konfessionalisierung gehört inzwischen zum Standard der Kunstgeschichte. Doch die Frage, welche Implikationen Textilien und Kleidung für den Protestantismus haben, wurde kaum je gestellt, so dass bislang vor allem die liturgischen Gewänder im Mittelpunkt des Interesses standen.
Um sich erstmals der komplexen Bedeutung der Textilien im Protestantismus anzunähern, will die Tagung die Fragestellung nicht auf das Luthertum oder auf eine Textilgattung verengen. Vielmehr sollen auch die reformierten Bekenntnisgruppen (Calvinisten, Zwinglianer, Hugenotten), der gesamte einstmals deutschsprachige Raum (einschließlich etwa auch der Gebiete des heutigen Ostmitteleuropas) und textile Objekte jeglicher Art in den Blick genommen werden. Zudem wird der Untersuchungszeitraum über die Frühe Neuzeit hinaus bis ins 19. Jahrhundert reichen. Es steht zu vermuten, dass das Erstarken des Bürgertums und die damit einhergehende Umdeutung von Kleidung und äußerer Erscheinung auch die konfessionelle Textilkultur betraf. Darüber hinaus führten im deutschen Staatenbund die Unionen der beiden protestantischen Bekenntnisgruppen (wie die Preußische Union von 1817) zu einer intensivierten Auseinandersetzung über den protestantischen Kirchenraum und seine Ausstattung.
Die Tagung möchte dem Leitthema unter einem möglichst breiten methodischen Zugang nachgehen. Erwünscht sind Beiträge aus Disziplinen wie Kunstgeschichte, Textilkunde, Kleidungsforschung, Textilanthropologie, Theologie, Kirchen- und Profangeschichte sowie Volkskunde / Europäischen Ethnologie.

Denkbar sind unter anderem Beiträge zu den Bereichen:
- Textilien / Kleidung als Formung und Präsentation des konfessionellen Körpers
- Textilien / Kleidung in protestantischen Kirchenordnungen und städtischen Kleiderordnungen
- Textilien / Kleidung im theoretischen/(kontrovers)theologischen Schrifttum
- Textilien / Kleidung und ihre konfessionellen Bezüge im Privathaus, in der Stadt, am Hof, im Kirchenraum
- Textilien / Kleidung und ihre konfessionelle Aussagen im Bild: Porträts, Kircheninterieurs u.a.

Fahrt- und Hotelkosten werden übernommen. Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch. Vorschläge für einen 30minütigen Vortrag sind in Form eines Abstracts von max. 1800 Zeichen und einer Kurzbiografie mit einschlägigen Publikationen bis zum 08.02.2019 zu richten an e.meiergnm.de und a.raschegnm.de.

The Fabric of Protestants: Textiles and Clothing in the Lutheran and Reformed Confessions
International Conference

The conference lies at the intersection of the study of confessions on the one hand and textiles and clothing on the other. It thus combines areas that have only begun to be examined together.
In recent years the multifaceted study of textiles has yielded considerable insights, for example into the complex interdependence of textile culture and theology in the context of medieval piety. Investigation of the imagery of the Protestant Reformation and the age of confessionalization is now common in art history. But the question of the implications of textiles and clothing for Protestantism has hardly been posed, and attention has focused mainly on liturgical vestments.
In order to approach the complex significance of textiles in Protestantism, the conference will focus not only on Lutherans or a single genre of textiles; it will also consider the Reformed confessions (Calvinists, Zwinglians, Huguenots), all historically German-speaking areas (including, for example, parts of present-day east-central Europe), and textile objects of all kinds. The period of investigation reaches beyond the early modern period into the 19th century. Presumably the empowerment of the bourgeoisie and the accompanying reinterpretation of textile culture and outward appearance also affected confessional textile culture. In addition, the unions of the two Protestant confessional groups in the German Confederation (such as the Prussian Union of 1817) led to an intensified involvement with Protestant church interior and its furnishings.
The conference wishes to examine its guiding topic with a broad array of methodologies. We welcome contributions from disciplines such as art history, the study of textiles and clothing, textile anthropology, theology, ecclesiastical and secular history, and European ethnology / cultural anthropology.

Possible topics might include:
- textiles / clothing and the formation and presentation of the confessional body
- textiles / clothing in Protestant church ordinances and municipal sumptuary laws
- textiles / clothing in theoretical and (controversialist) theological writings
- textiles / clothing and their confessional aspects in the home, in public civic space, at the princely court, and in church
- textiles / clothing and their confessional messages in images: portraits, depictions of church interiors, etc.

Conference and hotel costs of invited speakers will be covered. The conference languages are German and English. A proposal for a 30-minute talk should be submitted as an abstract (max. 1800 characters) along with a short curriculum vitae that includes relevant publications. Due date: February 8, 2019.
