The School of Art + Art History seeks an Assistant Professor in African Art History for a tenure-accruing faculty position with an expected start date of August 16, 2019. The faculty member will pursue an active program of research; teach a 2-2 load of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, including advanced courses in the field of specialty and (as needed) an introductory survey and/or general education courses; supervise MA and PhD students; and contribute service to the university, the community, and the profession.

The faculty member will be an affiliate of the University of Florida’s Center for African Studies (CAS) who participates in CAS activities and fosters connections between the School of Art + Art History and CAS. UF is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the premier institutions for the study of Africa through its Center for African Studies. Art History faculty have been important contributors to the Center’s mission through research, undergraduate teaching, the training of graduate students, frequent sponsorship of lectures and seminars by visiting scholars, membership in the editorial consortium for the journal African Arts, and collaboration on national and international exhibitions produced in conjunction with UF’s Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art. African art is one of the collecting focuses of the museum with a curator dedicated to the field who is an affiliate of CAS.

The Center for African Studies is a Title VI National Resource Center that promotes excellence in teaching and research on Africa in all the disciplines at UF. More than 100 affiliate faculty teach courses in languages, the humanities, the social sciences, agriculture, business, engineering, education, arts, environmental studies and conservation, journalism, and law. CAS disseminates knowledge about Africa to the wider community, develops links with individuals and institutions on the African continent, awards Foreign Languages and Area Studies grants in six African languages, sponsors national and international lectures and an annual African Studies conference, and offers residencies for scholars from African institutions. The George A. Smathers Libraries support this work through a dedicated Africanist librarian and special collections.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Art History or a related field, or ABD nearing completion of the PhD
- Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Promise of excellence in research
- Ability to teach courses on contemporary and historical African art

Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in hand
- Research specialization or methodology that complements other strengths of the art history and African studies programs
- Promising record of publications
- Teaching experience as the instructor of record at the university level
- Successful experience with innovative, cross-disciplinary, or digital curricula
