1-2 PhD positions (Promotionsstipendien) in early modern art history / visual culture at the LMU, Institute for Art History (ERC SACRIMA)

Up to two PhD students (pre-doctoral researchers) in early modern art history/visual culture are sought to work within the ERC-funded research project “The Normativity of Sacred Images in Early Modern Europe” (SACRIMA) coordinated by Chiara Franceschini at the Institute for Art History of the LMU, Munich.

Salary range: 13 TV-L
Hours: 65%

The suitable candidates will be part of an international and interdisciplinary research team and are expected to work in close collaboration with Prof. Franceschini on both the SACRIMA project and their own PhD dissertations. The PhD dissertations will be connected to the stated themes and objectives of the SACRIMA project.

PREREQUISITES AND JOB DESCRIPTION
The suitable candidates will have a relevant university degree, completed with excellent results, in areas of the History of Art and/or Visual Culture or Cultural History of early modern Europe. An interest for archival research and/or the implementation of digital tools connected with the project would be desirable.

They will develop and complete a PhD dissertation in one of the research areas relevant for the SACRIMA project, including: 1) Early modern art theory; 2) Print culture and the mediating role of prints in relation with the intra- and extra-European circulation of sacred images; 3) Cultural exchange between Northern and Southern Europe (e.g. artists travelling North-South or East-West in Europe or artists working for publics of different confessions); 4) The role of art and images in early modern religious and/or political conflicts; 5) Architectural and visual projects of the Counter-Reformation (e.g., the reorganization and decoration of sacred spaces; the replication, restoration or reframing of altarpieces and/or sacred images).

As part of the SACRIMA team based in Munich, the successful PhD candidates will work on their own dissertations as well as on the common projects of the research group, namely a digital atlas of contested artworks in Europe, an online resource collecting European early modern texts on the sacred image and a series of planned publications.

They will have a travel budget to conduct research on fieldwork and/or in archives, libraries and museums outside Munich. They are expected to be involved in all the collaborative activities of the project group as well as in some administrative work associated with the project. They will be encouraged to publish the results of their research within the publication program of the project and/or in peer-reviewed journals.

LMU is recognized as one of Europe's premier academic and research institutions. The University is situated in the heart of Munich.
