View. Theories and Practices of Visual Culture

Issue: "Images for Children"

Managing editors: Katarzyna Bojarska & Paweł Mościcki

Honey-Bunnies, fairies, flowers, fluffy animals with big eyes and vivid colours: the aesthetics of imagery addressed to children is “childish” – cute, immediately legible and easily decoded. However, we would like to inquire about other possible, existing or potential aesthetics of childhood: where do they come from, what are they and what are their social and cultural consequences, what do they tell us about kids and adults? Images for kids include not only images of kids, or childish images, and images of kids are not necessarily and not always addressed to and appropriate for them. There are also images that have an indirect though essential relation to children, testifying to various heterogenous forms of children’s visuality and (in)visibility of kids. The context is truly vast – especially if we were to recall that for quite some time all images, not only these addressed to the youngest, were considered “childishly” simple, and “childish” questions more often than not turn out to be absolutely fundamental. We are interested in an analysis of forms, genres and affects – both contemporary and historical – which relate to visual representations of kids and for kids. We are looking for kids-images and forms of visuality which develops around them.

We welcome responses to these and other questions related to the visual culture of children and childhood.
