L'évolution de la broderie de tradition byzantine dans la Méditerranée et le monde slave (1200-1800)

Le numéro des Cahiers Balkaniques(INALCO) qui paraîtra en 2019 sera dédié à la broderie ecclésiastique de tradition byzantine et à ses différents modes d'évolution dans l'Est méditerranéen. Cette thématique a comme but d'examiner comment cet art évolue à travers les siècles, à partir du Moyen Âge jusqu'au XIXe siècle.

Les articles proposés peuvent concerner

- divers aspects de cet art durant le Moyen Âge,
- son évolution artistique et technique durant les périodes byzantine et post-byzantine,
- les influences iconographiques et techniques occidentales ou orientales,
- la relation de la broderie de tradition byzantine avec les pays de l'Orient chrétien (par exemple l'Arménie, la Géorgie…),
- la broderie de tradition byzantine dans le monde slave,
- l'exploration de productions dans les lieux limitrophes entre l'Italie et la Grèce (par exemple les îles ioniennes),
- la circulation des broderies byzantines en Occident ou en Orient,
- la broderie chrétienne en Egypte et au Levant.


Les articles proposés par des chercheurs jeunes ou établis seront considérés de façon égale selon leur originalité, fondée soit sur une analyse technique, soit sur une interprétation iconographique ou textuelle évidente.Les sujets qui demandent une approche interdisciplinaire seront particulièrement bien accueillis.Les articles sont acceptés en français et en anglais.

The Byzantine tradition of Church embroidery in the Mediterranean and the Slavic World (1200-1800)

This thematic issue of Cahiers Balkaniques (INALCO), which appears in 2019, celebrates the Byzantine tradition of Church embroidery and its various afterlives. It aims at investigating its evolution within the sphere of Byzantium's cultural influence and beyond, with a chronological scope which beginsfrom the Late Middle Ages and stretches until the 19thcentury, when artisanal productions begin to decline.

- The different aspects of Byzantine ecclesiastical embroidery and its artistic and technical evolutions.
- Embroidery techniques and iconographies transmitted from West and/or East.
- The relationship between Byzantine/post-Byzantine productions and the Christian Orient (ex. Armenia, Georgia).
- The management of Byzantine heritage in the Slavic World.
- Italian-Greek borderland productions (ex. the Ionian Islands).
- The circulation of Byzantine embroideries overseas (Italy, Eastern Europe and beyond).
- Christian embroidery in Egypt and the Levant.


Proposals by junior and senior researchers will be equally considered with priority being given to original research, whether based on technical analysis, iconographical interpretation or textual evidence. Subjects which favor interdisciplinarity are particularly welcome. The volume will be bilingual (French and English) and will appear in print in 2019.
