ARTIS - Institute of Art History at the University of Lisbon will publish during the present year, 2017, the Nr. 5 of ARTis ON, an electronic journal devoted to the dissemination of Art History studies, Heritage Science and Art Market.
ARTis ON is an annual scientific journal, published only in digital format, open to collaboration with all, academics, students, heritage technicians, agents of the art market, etc., in order to promote emerging studies that stand out for their quality and originality.
Dedicated to the plurality of issues involving the Arts and Heritage, both national and international, ARTis ON comprise a Thematic Block and a Varia section, aimed at small items such as book reviews, news of recent discoveries, innovations produced by research projects, interviews, etc.
The investment in digital format and in the possibility of publishing articles in several foreign languages (English, Spanish, French and Italian) aims to expand the journal disclosure and allow the publication by foreign authors.
The new issue will focus on VANDALISM AND ICONOCLASM. These are subjects of the highest actuality, which raises controversial issues that transcend cultural and temporal boundaries.
The elimination of cultural heritage for ideological reasons; the relation between destruction and superstition; anticlericalism and religious debate; destruction resulting from situations of armed conflict or from serious social and economic problems; the disregard for what is not valued; ignorance and fanaticism; the deliberate suppression of cultural heritage aiming the modification of historical memory; or other more subtle and legalized forms of iconoclasm (e.g. selective conservation or the curator as iconoclastic, from Boris Groys' perspective), are phenomena that trigger changes in interpretation, adulteration, and / or inestimable losses of heritage, but which also provide important challenges of valorisation and of educating in the areas of art and heritage, challenges of protection and conservation; of restoration and reconstruction or even reconstruction.
However, iconoclasm can also be a form of protest or a vehicle for creative expression. In the context of modern and contemporary art, iconoclasm emerges as a means of renewal, destroying the existing values and making others arise in its place. The abandonment of the traditional, the negation of the values of the past, result in transforming artistic interventions, creating entirely new objects or meanings through alterations to existing artworks.
It is all these aspects that the new issue of ARTis ON intends to address, challenging researchers to adopt a broad approach to the theme, which considers religious and political iconoclasm, condemnation and manipulation of memory, protection of cultural and artistic heritage throughout the ages, but also street art, graffiti, performance or activism as expression of iconoclasm characteristic of contemporary art.
Articles related to these topics will be accepted until September 15, 2017, according to the journal's guidelines available at:
