Bilder im Konflikt: fotografische und filmische Bilder von Krisen- und Konfliktsituationen verändern sich in Ästhetik und Gebrauchsweisen – und geraten damit selbst ins Visier. Zum einen haben sich im Zuge der digitalen Entwicklungen die BildproduzentInnen und Distributionskanäle von Bildern vervielfältigt. Das erweitert Perspektiven und ermöglicht neue Erzählformen. Zum anderen geht damit eine Erschütterung des klassischen bildjournalistischen Selbstverständnisses einher. Die Konkurrenz der visuellen Strategien sucht das Affektpotential der Bilder zu steigern. Zugleich wird hinterfragt, inwieweit Fotografien noch als Zeugnisse wirken können. Sie bewegen sich im Spannungsfeld von Wahrheitsansprüchen zwischen Authentizität, Objektivität und Propaganda. Ihre Kontextualisierungen und Rahmungen stellen Bedeutungen her – und erfordern Reflexion.

Das Symposium ›Images in Conflict‹ lässt ExpertInnen aus Theorie und Praxis indexikalischer Bilder aufeinandertreffen und in einen Diskurs über visuelle Zeugenschaft und emotionale Überzeugungskraft eintreten.
Unter dem Titel ›IMAGE MATTERS‹ schafft der Studiengang ›Fotojournalismus und Dokumentarfotografie‹ eine Diskursplattform, die Fragestellungen aus der fotografischen Bildpraxis und Diskurse der Bild- und Fototheorie sowie der Visual und Cultural Studies in einen Dialog bringt, der für beide Seiten wesentliche neue Perspektiven eröffnet.
›IMAGE MATTERS‹ soll fotografische Diskurse vertiefen, Workshops und Symposien veranstalten sowie Publikationen erarbeiten, die sich an Studierende und ein professionelles Fachpublikum aus Praxis, Theorie und Forschung richten.

Veranstaltungsort des Symposiums ist das Auditorium in der Hochschule Hannover, Expo Plaza 2, 30539 Hannover. Die Vorträge finden teils in englischer (e), teils in deutscher (d) Sprache statt. Ein Dolmetschservice wird auf vorherige Anfrage angeboten.

Images in Conflict: Photographic and cinematic images of situations of crisis and conflict change in terms of aesthetics and applications, thereby becoming targets themselves. On the one hand, image producers and the distribution channels for images have multiplied in the course of digital developments. This broadens perspectives and enables new narrative forms. On the other hand, it is associated with an upheaval of classical photojournalistic self-perception. The rivalry between visual strategies can increase the affective potential of images. It also raises the question to what extent photographs can still function as witnesses. In the realm of claims to truth, they move among authenticity, objectivity and propaganda. Their contextualisation and framing create meanings and require reflection.
The symposium ›Images in Conflict‹ will bring together experts in the theory and practice of photographic images and foster a discussion of visual testimony and emotional persuasiveness.

Under the title ›IMAGE MATTERS‹, the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography programme has created a platform for discussion about issues in photographic practice, discourse in the theory of image and photography as well as in visual and cultural studies. This dialogue will open up important new perspectives for both sides. ›IMAGE MATTERS‹ will encourage photographic discussion, host workshops and symposia and develop publications aimed at students and a specialised audience from the areas of practice, theory and research.
