LA PREMIERE ŒUVRE (XVe-XXIe SIÈCLES)

La question de la première œuvre soulève des difficultés de définition complexes, avec des coordonnées variables en fonction des disciplines, des périodes, des contextes de réalisation, notamment pour les périodes plus anciennes où la datation de l'œuvre au sein de la biographie de l'artiste échappe souvent faute de sources. Elle relève également de problèmes de taxinomie : qu'est-ce qui détermine la primauté de l'œuvre, l'artiste, le public, le marché, la postérité ? Mais cette difficulté touche aussi la notion d'œuvre en elle-même comme représentative d'une réalisation première : faut-il la concevoir comme un objet singulier, comme un groupe d'œuvres rassemblées en série ou en recueil, comme l'ensemble de la production d'une période juvénile à cheval entre la formation et l'affirmation de l'identité artistique? S'il est impossible de fixer « la première œuvre » dans un énoncé catégorique, les tensions qui travaillent la conception même de l'œuvre première font bien la richesse du thème.
Par le biais de la première œuvre, ce colloque se propose d'interroger, dans les champs de l'histoire de l'art et de la musicologie, la production de jeunesse des artistes, à ce moment charnière où l'identité créatrice se forge, encore incertaine mais déjà porteuse des prémices de sa maturité. Il ne s'agira pas tant de la première œuvre comme premier objet matériel, premier essai esquissé, encore imparfait si ce n'est maladroit, mais plutôt de l'œuvre première dans le sens d'un premier aboutissement, reconnu comme une production accomplie par l'artiste, par ses contemporains ou encore par la postérité.

THE PRIMARY WORK (15th-21st CENTURIES)

The question of the primary/first work raises problems of definition according to various fields, periods or contexts of achievement, especially for ancient periods where the lack of sources often prevents the work’s dating within the artist’s biography. It also comes within problems of taxonomy: does the artist, the audience, the market, or posterity determine the primacy of the work? This problem also addresses the notion of work as representative of a primary achievement: should it be conceived as a single piece, as a body of works assembled in a series, or as a whole early production straddling the training period and the emergence of an artistic identity? Even if it is impossible to fix the primary work in categorical terms, such tensions in its very conception account for the richness of this issue.
Through the concept of the primary work, the conference aims to question the artists’ early works in the fields of art history and musicology. We will focus on the juvenilia of an artist, at the turning point when its creative identity takes shape, still uncertain but yet carrying the beginning of its maturity. This means not so much the first work as a material object, a first attempt still imperfect or clumsy, as the first accomplishment acknowledged by the artist himself, by its contemporaries or by posterity.
