New Treatments of the Figure in Literature and the Visual Arts / Nouveaux régimes de la figure. Littérature et arts visuels

New ways of approaching the figurality of the figure (Barbara Johnson) have become increasingly visible across disciplines and research fields over the last decades. Recent lines of investigation in art history and historiography, literary studies and media studies, phenomenology and aesthetics are gradually bringing to the fore an intermedial concept of figure by means of which images and linguistic constructions can be analyzed as complex and variable configurations of human experience. At the same time, various treatments of the figure in literary and artistic practices are placing a new emphasis on its ambivalence and constitutive tensions, thus opening the way for innovative critical and creative uses.

We may argue, therefore, that the new treatments of the figure in contemporary literature and visual arts are indicative of a shift from an extensive regime of representation to an intensive regime of communication revealing the dynamic and relational aspect at work in the figural play (Laurent Jenny) of text and image. In an age of unprecedented proliferation and hybridization of expressive forms and media, tropology goes beyond the rhetorical and hermeneutical tradition towards an understanding of the figure as force and form, invention and convention, trace and resemblance. Building upon Lyotard’s figural, Louis Marin’s figurability, and exploring the theoretical suggestions offered by both Barthes’ analysis of the obtuse meaning and Rancière’s account of the figures of history, the aim of this conference is to invite reflection on the “dual and paradoxical” (Philippe Dubois) identity of the figure in today’s theoretical discourse and artistic practice.

Au croisement de plusieurs champs d’étude, le concept de figure connaît depuis quelques dizaines d’années un renouvellement théorique. De la psychanalyse à l’histoire de l’art et à l’historiographie, des études littéraires aux études visuelles, de l’esthétique aux approches phénoménologiques, on assiste à l’élaboration d’un concept transversal de figure qui pousse les disciplines à sortir de leurs cadres pour étudier le langage et l’image en tant que formes complexes de l’expérience humaine, et non seulement dans leur organisation structurale. La pensée, la sensibilité et les pratiques artistiques contemporaines nous invitent à un examen détaillé des mouvements et des tensions intrinsèques de la figure afin de mieux saisir sa force polémique et son ambivalence constitutives.

Acte de création et objet de pensée à la fois, la figure pose actuellement la question brûlante d’un régime intensif valorisant la composante énergétique, processuelle, relationnelle de la figure dans l’analyse des objets artistiques. On parle d’une identité « double et paradoxale » (Philippe Dubois) de la figure, au sens où elle se donne à entendre à la fois comme force et forme, invention et convention, trace matérielle et image ressemblante. Avec la question du figural (Jean-François Lyotard) et de la figurabilité (Louis Marin), du sens obtus (Roland Barthes) et du symptôme (Georges Didi-Huberman), on nous apprend à entrer dans l’image et dans le texte par ce qui se présente de face mais résiste aux approches traditionnelles qui ont réduit la figure à son régime représentatif et symbolique.

Dans le déferlement des images contemporaines, cette économie nouvelle de la figure annonce une revitalisation du discours interprétatif en littérature et arts visuels, ainsi qu’une reconfiguration de l’histoire (Jacques Rancière). Mais qu’en est-il de ce jeu du « figural » (Laurent Jenny) qui trouve une place si importante dans la réflexion actuelle ? Quelles formes de savoir en découlent, quelle histoire culturelle ou intellectuelle propose-t-elle ? Notre colloque vise à rassembler des contributions qui s’intéressent aux usages de la figure dans le discours théorique et les pratiques artistiques contemporaines.
