The 8th Annual CCVA Conference: Transdisciplinary China: Research in Practice

Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) is pleased to announce a call-out for their forthcoming conference Transdisciplinary China: Research in Practice. This one-day symposium seeks to interrogate the nature and significance of transdisciplinary research and arts practice in and about contemporary China, its arts and culture.

This event will include a screening of CCVA and Chronus Arts Centre fellow Shen Xin’s new project Shoulders of Giants in addition to showcasing research from an open call and invited PhD students, emerging and established artists, academics and researchers from a range of disciplines. The diverse panel discussions, papers, performances and exhibits will serve to generate discussion and enable us to identify common areas of interest and communities of practice; to share, encourage and support new research as it happens with a global audience. There will also be an opportunity for delegates to share and promote publications related to the conference theme.

The event will consider:

• The nature and the significance of transdisciplinary research and practice, and how these dialogues create new knowledge;
• The importance, impact, influence and potential of transcultural research;
• New ways of framing and discussing Chinese Contemporary Arts that moves beyond the traditional East/West paradigm;
• The significance of practice-based and practice-led research in relation to Chinese contemporary arts and culture.

CCVA invites abstracts and proposals (10 minute slots) that respond to the general theme. We are keen to encourage artist interventions, performances, pop-up exhibitions that can be accommodated within the time frame and ‘format’ of the symposium. Please note that we are not able to provide technical assistance or equipment.

Abstracts and proposals of 150-200 words (max), a short biography of 100 words (maximum) and weblink to a maximum of 5 (specified) relevant images/moving image/audio files.

Additional Information: Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) aims to foster new understandings and perspectives of Chinese contemporary arts, design, media and culture through transdisciplinary creative practices and theoretical studies. Initiated in 2007, through an international institutional network with Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (CAFA) and China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou (CAA), CCVA is hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at Birmingham City University, UK. With extensive regional to international partnerships, CCVA brings together artists, designers, curators and researchers who are working with, or are interested in, contemporary contexts of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to share expertise, understand, critique, innovate and create. Shoulders of Giants is a project initiated by Shen Xin (www.shenxin.info). It appropriates and extends the model of a symposium through animation, performance and projection. The invited speakers will animate creatures derived from Shan Hai Jing (Also known as The Classics of Mountains and Seas, C4th BC) as they speak, discuss and conduct Q&A. Shoulders of Giants is supported by Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA), Birmingham City University, and Faceshift; funded by Chronus Arts Center (www.chronusartcenter.org/en) in Shanghai.
