Zürich, 1. März 2011. trans ist das halbjährlich erscheinende Fachmagazin des Architekturdepartements der ETH Zürich und wird seit 1997 von einer unabhängigen, studentischen Redaktion geführt. Das Heft diskutiert aktuelle Themen der Architektur und des Städtebaus im Spannungsfeld von Gesellschaft, Politik, Philosophie und Kunst. trans versteht sich damit als Plattform des disziplinübergreifenden Diskurses.

Die vorausgegangenen Ausgaben von trans bewegten sich primär an der Schnittstelle zu ökonomischen und soziologischen Themen, um die Bedingungen zu ergründen, in deren Kontext Architektur entstehen kann. <trans19> soll nunmehr unter dem Titel «Komposition» die Architektur als ordnende, schöpferische Tätigkeit von innen her adressieren. Mit Einbezug anderer gestaltenden Disziplinen soll dieser Begriff – im aktuellen Architekturdiskurs geflissentlich gemieden – erschlossen werden.

Was bedeutet Komposition heute? Aus dem Lateinischen lässt sich Komposition mit Zusammenstellung übersetzen. Doch Architektur ist mehr als ein pragmatischer Akt. Komposition als kunstvolle Anordnung umschrieben, geht über die Bedeutung als didaktisches Hilfsmittel hinaus und betont den Wirkungszusammenhang von einzelnen Elementen. Komposition findet sich sowohl im individuell Schöpferischen als auch im kombinatorisch Wissenschaftlichen. Komposition kann so gleichsam Mittel der Gestaltung als auch der Bewertung sein. In anderen Disziplinen, wie der Musik oder der bildenden Kunst, ist der Begriff zentrales Instrument des kreativen Schaffens. Auf welche Weise könnte der Begriff für den gegenwärtigen Architekturdiskurs an Relevanz gewinnen? In welchem Verhältnis steht Komposition als Kompetenz zu anderen Vektoren der Architekturproduktion? Als disziplininhärenten Begriff fragen wir nach fachübergreifenden Bezügen und praxisnahen Antworten – nach kontroversen Auslegungen und ambitionierten Erklärungen.

Wir möchten das Feld breit öffnen und neben Architekten auch Stimmen aus der Kunst, der Musik oder dem Theater zusammenführen. Für die Auseinandersetzung sind wir interessiert an Positionen, Bewegungen und Perspektiven. In ihrer Form divers und ihrem Inhalt entsprechend, können sowohl wissenschaft-liche Arbeiten, persönliche Essays, feurige Glossen, radikale Traktate, präzise Portraits, als auch Grafiken, Fotostrecken oder Bildcollagen eingereicht werden.

Zunächst sind wir an einer kurzen Beschreibung Ihres Beitrages in Form eines Abstracts interessiert. Dieses sollte maximal eine A4-Seite bzw. 600 Wörter umfassen, möglicherweise ergänzt durch wenige Bilder. Bitte senden Sie uns Ihr Abstract bis am 28. März 2011 per Mail an die untenstehende Adresse. Der abgeschlossene Beitrag sollte uns bis Ende Mai 2011 vorliegen. <trans19> wird im September 2011 im Buchhandel erhältlich sein.

Zurich, March 1, 2011. trans is a semi-annual professional journal of the Department of Architecture at the ETH Zurich and has been edited by an independent student editorial team since 1997. The journal addresses current issues from a variety of areas, such as the humanities, politics, philosophy and the arts, prevailing in the context of architecture and urban development. Thus it is conceived as a platform for interdisciplinary discourse.

The past issues of trans were mainly dedicated to economic and sociological themes to examine the conditions in which architecture can emerge. Conversely, with the title «composition», <trans19> shall address architecture as a creative and regulatory occupation from the inside. This term – assiduously avoided in contemporary architectural discourse – shall be explored by taking into account not just voices from within the architectural discourse but also from other design disciplines.

What can composition mean today? The Latin translation suggests assembling or compiling elements. But architecture is more than a pragmatic act. Composition, understood as an elaborate artistic combination, surpasses the meaning of a mere didactical tool and emphasizes the interdependence of individual elements. Composition comprises the individual and artistic as well as the combinational and scientific. Composition can be both an agent for creation and evaluation. In other disciplines, notably in music and the fine arts, composition is an essential device for production. In which way could the term gain relevance in contemporary architectural discourse? What is the relationship between composition as a competence and other vectors of architectural production? To get to the root of this term intrinsic to architecture, we ask for transdisciplinary relations and practical answers, for controversial interpretations and ambitious explanations.

We would like to open up the field and consolidate voices not only from architecture but also from the arts, music or the theatre. For this debate, we are interested in positions, movements, and perspectives. Diverse in form and according to their content we are looking for scientific articles, personal essays, shrewd and discerning comments, radical tracts, concise portraits, as well as graphics, photo series or collages.

First, please submit a brief description of your work in the form of an abstract. This should be one DIN A4 page at most or contain a maximum of 600 words, respectively, possibly illustrated with one or two pictures. We are looking forward to receiving your abstract by March 28. The complete contribution will be due by the end of May. <trans19> will be available in selected bookstores in September 2011.
