Der 1961 unter Regie von Alain Resnais gedrehte Film "L'Année dernière à
Marienbad" hat Geschichte geschrieben: Radikal wie kein Film zuvor
bricht Resnais' filmische Übertragung des avantgardistischen Nouveau
Roman von Alain Robbe-Grillet mit traditionellen Strukturen von Zeit,
Ort und Kausalität. Die Erzählung ist fragmentiert und durch
irritierende Wiederholungen, Variationen und Erzählschlaufen geprägt.
Labyrinthische, minutenlange Kamerafahrten fangen die barock
überbordende und zugleich symmetrisch formalistische Ästhetik der
Drehorte in den Münchner Schlössern Schleißheim und Nymphenburg ein. In
der künstlichen und emotionslosen Inszenierung erstarren die Darsteller
zu surreal wirkenden Tableaux Vivants, deren stilvolle Kostüme die
Modeschöpferin Coco Chanel entwarf. Resnais, Robbe-Grillet und der
Szenenbildner Jacques Saulnier lassen in ihren
assoziativ-manieristischen Bildern den Zuschauer stets im Unklaren, ob
das Gezeigte Wirklichkeit oder Traum, Vision oder Wahnvorstellung ist.
Als ein hochartifizielles und mit Bedacht inszeniertes Konstrukt spielt
der Film mit einer künstlerischen Sprache, in der Stil selbst zum Inhalt
wird, sowie mit geometrischen Formen, architektonischen Fluchten und
sich wiederholenden kompositorischen Grundprinzipien. Durch dieses
komplexe, ästhetische Verfahren wirkte das Gemeinschaftswerk von
Robbe-Grillet und Resnais nicht nur prägend auf andere Filmregisseure,
sondern definierte ein sich auf alle künstlerischen Bereiche
auswirkendes Kunstverständnis, das bis heute aktuell und relevant ist.

Die Kunsthalle Bremen wird in der Ausstellung "Letztes Jahr in
Marienbad. Ein Film als Kunstwerk" (14. November 2015 bis 13. März 2016)
anhand von künstlerischen Positionen vom beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert bis
zur Gegenwart erstmals die besondere Bedeutung der im Marienbad-Film
geprägten Nouvelle Vague-Ästhetik für die bildende Kunst aufzeigen und
ihre anhaltende internationale Relevanz erlebbar machen. Das im Vorfeld
der Ausstellung am 23. April 2015 stattfindende internationale Symposium
gibt Einblicke in die aktuelle Forschung zum Marienbad-Film aus den
Bereichen der Kunst-, Film-, und Kulturwissenschaft.

LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD. A FILM AS ART
Kunsthalle Bremen – Der Kunstverein in Bremen

The 1961 film "L'Année dernière à Marienbad” directed by Alain Resnais
wrote history: More radically than any previous film, Resnais' cinematic
adaptation of Alain Robbe-Grillet's avant-garde Nouveau Roman breaks
with traditional structures of time, place and causality. The plot is
fragmented and characterized by irritating repetition, variations and
narrative loops. Labyrinthine tracking shots lasting several minutes
capture the excessive baroque and simultaneously symmetrical formalistic
aesthetic of the locations which were shot at the palaces of Schleißheim
and Nymphenburg in Munich. Against the backdrop of the artistic and
unemotional staging, the actors, whose stylish costumes were created by
the fashion designer Coco Chanel, are frozen into surrealistic tableaux
vivants. The associative-mannerist images of Resnais, Robbe-Grillet and
set designer Jacques Saulnier leave the audience in the dark as to
whether the events portrayed are reality or dreams, visions or
hallucinations. As a highly artificial, deliberately staged construct
the film plays with an artistic language in which the style itself
becomes the content alongside geometrical shapes, architectural
alignment and repetitive basic compositional principles. Through these
complex, aesthetic techniques, this collaboration between Robbe-Grillet
and Resnais has not only influenced other directors, but also defines an
understanding of art that has affected all artistic areas and one which
remains up-to-date and relevant today.

The exhibition "Last Year in Marienbad. A Film as Art” (14 November 2015
– 13 March 2016) designed by the Kunsthalle Bremen with works from the
beginning of the twentieth century to the present will for the first
time demonstrate the special significance that the Nouvelle Vague
aesthetic that distinguishes the Marienbad film has for the visual arts
and will provide visitors with an understanding of its lasting
international relevance. The international symposium will present new
research dealing with the Marienbad film from the fields of fine arts,
film and cultural studies.
