Braunschweig University of the Arts, Germany, is pleased to announce the following positions

12 fully funded PhD positions
8 non-funded associated PhD positions

in the new PhD Program The Photographic Dispositif (GRK1843), made possible by the financial support of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The starting date of the program is October 1, 2013. A stipend of 1.200 Euro monthly plus the cost of materials will be provided to the fully funded positions for up to three years. Associates do not receive individual funding, but will be given the opportunity to participate in the research program in Braunschweig free of charge.

The Photographic Dispositif addresses the photographic process as a complex act that is based on specific historical, medial, technological, social, cultural, and aesthetic conditions, including the potential to disturb and modify these very conditions. We welcome PhD projects related to the formation, handling, perception, and exhibition of photography alongside its discourses, as well as projects that scrutinize the specific power of the image and the gaze as an effective means of discipline and/or as creative potential.

Braunschweig University of the Arts’ interdisciplinary exchange between Art and Media Studies, Fine Arts and Design, in connection with the collections and museums in its vicinity, offers the perfect context for a wide range of PhD projects about the history, theory and practices of the photographic act.

- Applications should include proof of the applicant’s academic qualifications (a copy of the applicant’s Master's Degree etc.)

- a five page abstract explaining the PhD project's affinity to the topic of the Graduate Research Program

- a curriculum vitae including an additional statement about the candidate’s broader academic and/or social interests and activities

Students who receive funding are expected to complete their PhD (Dr. phil.) at the Braunschweig University of the Arts. Financial, administrative and organizational assistance is offered to all participating students with children.

12 Promotionsstellen (Vollzeitstipendien)
8 Stellen für assoziierte Promovenden/-innen

mit einer Laufzeit von maximal 3 Jahren. Die Vollstipendiaten/-innen erhalten ein Stipendium nach den üblichen Sätzen der DFG (1.200 Euro plus Sachzulagen). Den Assoziierten wird die Möglichkeit gegeben, am Studienprogramm vor Ort teilzunehmen. Beginn des Kollegs ist der 01.10.2013.

Das Kolleg betrachtet das Fotografische als Handlungsgefüge, dem spezifische historische, technisch-mediale, soziale, kulturelle und ästhetische Bedingungen zugrunde liegen und dem zugleich das Potenzial zu deren Störung und Modifikation innewohnt. Dissertationsvorhaben über Entstehung, Handhabung, Wahrnehmung, Zeigen und Diskursivierung der Fotografie sind ebenso willkommen wie solche über die Bild- und Blickmacht von Fotografien, die als Disziplinierungsmittel oder kreatives Potenzial fungieren können.

Das Zusammenspiel der universitären Studiengänge Kunstwissenschaft und Medienwissenschaften mit der Freien Kunst und Gestaltung an der HBK Braunschweig und den Sammlungen der benachbarten Museen bietet den Kontext für ein breites Spektrum von Promotionsprojekten über Geschichte, Theorie und Praxis des Fotografischen.

Auswahlkriterien sind

- die Fachkompetenz der Bewerber/innen, die sich aus dem wissenschaft- lichen Werdegang ergibt; Voraussetzung ist ein abgeschlossenes Magister/ Masterstudium (Zeugnis)

- die Schnittmenge des Promotionsvorhabens mit den Inhalten des Kollegs, die sich einer maximal fünfseitigen Projektskizze entnehmen lässt

- die Diskursfähigkeit und soziale Kompetenz der Bewerber/innen, die aus den im Lebenslauf dokumentierten fachnahen und fachübergreifenden Aktivitäten hervorgehen

Von den Vollstipendiaten/-innen wird erwartet, dass sie an der HBK Braunschweig promovieren.

Für Promovierende mit Kindern stehen zusätzliche Fördermittel bereit.

Bei gleicher Qualifikation sollen Frauen im Rahmen der rechtlichen Möglichkeiten vorrangig berücksichtigt werden.

Schwerbehinderte werden bei gleicher Eignung und Befähigung bevorzugt berücksichtigt.
