The Outsider’s Eye / L'occhio del forestiero.
The Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database Project: Seminar series.
January–April 2027.
[Italian version below]
Since the launch of its public website in 2016, the Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database Project (https://koseodiah.org/) has become an important research tool for scholars and students of medieval southern Italy, making available historical images that document the development of cities, landscapes, and monuments over the course of centuries. At the same time, Project researchers and other colleagues have enriched the database with new catalogue entries drawn from collections, archives, and publications. Thanks to this enormous effort, the database now comprises almost 9,000 entries, all publicly available online.
To continue to foster dialogue with broader audiences of researchers and database users, the Project Team is delighted to announce a series of online seminars on the theme of “The Outsider’s Eye.” The seminars aim to present the results of ongoing or recently concluded projects that have used material from the database to investigate the critical approaches and historiographic terms with which foreign scholars, artists, and travelers have documented and interpreted, in both images and texts, the artistic patrimony and medieval architecture of southern Italy. The seminars will be held in English and will take place on Zoom over the course of the spring 2027 semester, on January 21, February 25, March 11, and April 22. Each presentation will last c. 45 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of questions and discussion.
We invite interested researchers to send proposals to Paola Vitolo (paola.vitolounina.it), copying the Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities “La Capraia” (lacapraiagmail.com) by November 7, 2026. Proposals should be a maximum of 300 words, and should be accompanied by a 1-page CV.
The seminar series is an initiative of the The Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database Project, in collaboration with the Università degli studi di Napoli “Federico II,” the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History (University of Texas at Dallas), and the Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities “La Capraia.”

The Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database Project: Ciclo di seminari.
Gennaio–Aprile 2027.
