Für das Jahr 2026 initiiert die Anna Polke-Stiftung unter dem Titel Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW ein internationales Forschungs- und Vermittlungsprojekt, das 40 Jahre nach Polkes gefeierter Athanor-Installation im Deutschen Pavillon der Venedig Biennale 1986 das ikonisch gewordene Werkensemble aus aktuellen Diskursen heraus neu adressiert. Das interdisziplinäre Projekt ist dezentral angelegt und findet mit verschiedenen Kooperationspartner:innen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis statt. Ziel ist es, im Rahmen eines Netzwerks aus Forschungsinstitutionen wie Universitäten, Kunsthochschulen, Museen, Sammlungen und gemeinsam mit Wissenschaftler:innen, Künstler:innen, Kurator:innen und Restaurator:innen Formate zu entwickeln, die der besonderen Strahlkraft von Polkes Biennale-Beitrag bis heute nachgehen. Auf diese Weise sollen unter dem gesetzten Fokus materialästhetische, ökologische und politische Fragen verhandelt werden, die mit Blick auf den künstlerischen Einsatz von unterschiedlichen Medien und Materialien und deren Zusammenspiel neue Perspektiven auf das Gesamtwerk des Künstlers eröffnen.
Durch Polkes bewusste Inszenierung und Gegenüberstellung von Natur- und Kulturobjekten sowie mit dem aktiven Einbezug transformativer Momente in die sich über die Ausstellungsdauer stetig verändernde Werkkonstellation, lässt sich der Pavillon als vibrierendes Environment lesen, als work in progress: Bewegungen und Auswirkungen auf diesen historischen Werkkomplex sowohl der Natur und des Klimas als auch der Menschen werden beispielsweise durch die Spiegelungen der Besucher:innen in den riesigen im Hauptraum des Pavillons aufgestellten Lackbildern oder durch die mit dem Feuchtigkeitsgehalt in der Luft sich verändernde Farbigkeit des salzhaltigen Wandauftrags bildhaft und ganz unmittelbar nachvollziehbar.
Auf diese Weise bringt die Installation einerseits sehr ortsspezifische und zeithistorische Aspekte mit sich, etwa durch die Verortung in der Lagunenstadt Venedig und der faschistischen Geschichte der monumentalen Architektur des Pavillons; andererseits wirft sie zeit- und raumübergreifende Fragen auf, beispielsweise nach kosmologischen Ordnungen oder der kulturellen Migration und (spiritueller) Verbundenheit natürlicher Artefakte, wenn ein Meteorit, ein Zinnoberstein und ein Bergkristall Teil des künstlerischen Gefüges werden. Aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und Perspektiven heraus kann die Athanor-Präsentation als Nukleus in Polkes Schaffen begriffen und aktiviert werden. So soll über einen Zeitraum von einem Jahr ein vielfältiges Programm umgesetzt werden, das an unterschiedlichen Orten stattfindet und Polkes Werk und die damit verbundenen Werkprozesse in Form von Ausstellungen, Sammlungsinterventionen, Gesprächen, Vorträgen, Exkursionen und Seminaren, einer Summer School, Lecture-Performances, Lesungen, Kinder-Workshops und anderen Beiträgen reflektiert. Veröffentlicht und begleitet wird das Jahresprogramm über eine Projektwebseite.

WER KANN SICH BEWERBEN?

Wir laden Institutionen wie Museen, Hochschulen, außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtungen, Akademien, aber auch Einzelpersonen wie Lehrende, Studierende, freie Wissenschaftler:innen und Künstler:innen aus dem In- und Ausland ein, sich mit einer Projektidee für die Teilnahme an dem Forschungs- und Vermittlungsprojekt Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW zu bewerben. Folgende Formate sind mit Bezug zum Projektthema und Werk von Sigmar Polke unter anderem denkbar: Talks, Workshops, Studientage, Gesprächsrunden, Seminare und Exkursionen mit Studierenden, künstlerische und wissenschaftliche Interventionen wie temporäre Präsentationen oder Performances in Sammlungen und Archiven, Vorträge im öffentlichen Raum, Aktionen an besonderen Orten wie Werkstätten, Laboren, Sternwarten, Projekträumen.
Es werden Formate gefördert, die unter dem gesetzten Athanor-Schwerpunkt aus aktuellen Diskursen heraus neue Perspektiven auf Sigmar Polkes Werk aufwerfen.

Projektspezifische Recherchen können bereits zur Antragsvorbereitung sowie projektbegleitend in der Anna Polke-Stiftung mit Blick ins Archiv und unter Nutzung der Bibliothek vor Ort durchgeführt werden.

FINANZIERUNG

Übernommen oder bezuschusst werden Ausgaben, die im Förderzeitraum 1.1.2026 bis 30.6. 2027 dazu dienen, die beantragten Projekte umzusetzen und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Folgende Kosten können übernommen werden: Honorar-, Recherche-, Reise- und Unterbringungskosten, Tagesspesen, Produktions- und Werbungskosten.

For 2026, the Anna Polke Foundation is initiating an international research and education project Sigmar Polke: Athanor NOW: forty years after Polke’s celebrated Athanor installation in the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1986, the project will revisit the iconic ensemble of work from the perspective of current discourses. This interdisciplinary project is decentralized and involves various academic and field-based cooperation partners. As part of a network of research institutions such as universities, art academies, museums, and collections, together with researchers, artists, curators, and restorers, the aim is to develop formats that explore the unique appeal of Polke’s contribution to the Biennale to this day. With this focus, material aesthetic, ecological, and political questions will be examined, opening up new perspectives on the artist’s oeuvre as a whole by considering the artistic use of different media and materials and the way they interact.
Through Polke‘s deliberate staging and juxtaposition of natural and cultural objects, as well as the active inclusion of transformative elements in the constellation of works that continuously evolved over the duration of the exhibition, the pavilion can be interpreted as a vibrant environment, as a work in progress: the fluctuations and effects of nature, the climate, and people on this historical complex of works are rendered visually and directly tangible—for example, through the reflections of the visitors in the enormous lacquer paintings installed in the main room of the pavilion, or through the wall paint containing salt that changed color depending on the level of humidity in the air.
In this way, the installation incorporated highly site-specific and historical aspects, such as its location in the lagoon city of Venice and the fascist history of the pavilion’s monumental architecture; on the other hand, it raised questions that transcended time and space, for example about cosmological order or the cultural migration and (spiritual) interconnectedness of natural artifacts, such as when a meteorite, a piece of cinnabar, and a rock crystal became part of the artistic composition. Viewed from a range of different disciplines and perspectives, the Athanor display can be understood and engaged with as a nucleus of Polke’s oeuvre. Over a period of one year, a diverse program will be implemented that will take place at different locations and reflect Polke’s work and his work processes in the form of exhibitions, collection interventions, talks, lectures, excursions and seminars, a summer school, lecture performances, readings, children’s workshops, and other contributions. The annual program is available on and accompanied by a project website.

WHO CAN APPLY?

We invite institutions including museums, universities, non-university research institutions, and academies, as well as individuals such as teachers, students, independent researchers, and artists from Germany and abroad to submit a project proposal for the research and education project Sigmar Polke: Athanor NOW. Potential formats related to the project theme and the work of Sigmar Polke include the following: talks, workshops, study days, panel discussions, seminars and excursions with students, artistic and research-based interventions including temporary presentations or performances in collections and archives, lectures in public spaces, and actions in special locations such as workshops, laboratories, observatories, and project spaces.
The aim is to promote formats that provide new perspectives on Sigmar Polke’s work based on current discourses and in keeping with the focus on Athanor.

You are welcome to carry out project-specific research at the Anna Polke Foundation to prepare your application as well as during the project itself with access to the archive and use of the library on site.

FUNDING

We will cover or subsidize expenses incurred that serve to implement the proposed projects and make them accessible to the public during the funding period from 1/1/2026 to 30/6/2027. The following expenses are eligible for funding: fees, research, travel, and accommodation costs, per diem allowances, production and advertising costs.
