The Barnard Art History Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary Art, which will begin July 1, 2025. We welcome applications from scholars with expertise in modern and contemporary art from any region, including but not limited to those with specializations in migration, displacement, diaspora, indigeneity, and cross-cultural exchange; postcolonial, decolonial, and race-aware methods; intersectional feminism, gender, queer-, and trans-theory; and artistic practices that challenge traditional Western-centric narratives and expand the scope of art historical inquiry.
Application Requirements:
The Department requires a Ph.D. in the History of Art at the time of appointment. Prior assistant-professor-level teaching experience at another college or university could be an asset but is not expected.
Candidates should submit a letter of application, a current curriculum vitae, and one article- or chapter-length sample of scholarly writing for review. Applications must confirm a strong research profile and a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, from broad survey courses to seminars in areas of expertise.
The cover letter should address how the candidate’s research approaches, teaching methodology, and public engagement will contribute to Barnard College and Columbia University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a dedication to mentoring undergraduates, supervising senior theses, and developing critical approaches to art history. Applicants should provide addresses for three writers who are prepared to send letters of reference on their behalf. Applicants must submit all materials by Dec. 15, 2024. For further information, contact the chair of the search committee, Alexander Alberro (aalberrobarnard.edu). For more information about the department, visit https://arthistory.barnard.edu/.
Salary range: $85,000 - $133,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
