Geographical Place & Conceptual Space: Approaches to the Study of Art of the American West.
Emerging scholars' symposium.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West, the art history graduate students and faculty of the School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma invite contributions for twenty-minute talks at an emerging scholars’ symposium, “Geographical Place & Conceptual Space: Approaches to the Study of Art of the American West.”

We encourage submissions that articulate: What are the most pressing questions that art historians are bringing to objects today? How are meanings—related to place, space, identity, and culture—made through and around art practices in the American West? What dialogues are built between artists of various backgrounds and cultures in the West? Especially welcome are talks that engage with cross-over between the American West and either or both of our two other areas of doctoral study: Native American Art and European Art.

Selected participants will be funded to travel to Norman, Oklahoma, from April 4-6, 2024. The symposium will take place on Friday, April 5, 2024, with a concluding keynote lecture, “‘Hewn out of Rock:’ Native America and Memorial Narratives,” by Scott Manning Stevens, PhD (Akwesasne Mohawk), Associate Professor and Director of Native American and Indigenous Studies and Associate Professor of English at Syracuse University.

Priority will be given to advanced undergraduate students, Masters’ students and emerging professionals in the arts.

To apply, please send a 300-word abstract and short CV or brief bio to russellcenterou.edu. Also please ask your faculty advisor or a recommender to send a brief email of support to russellcenterou.edu by the deadline.

With any questions, please contact Meagan Evans at meaganou.edu or Emily Burns at emily.burnsou.edu.

Deadline for complete submissions: January 12, 2024.
