The Art Department at Sacramento State seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Asian Art History with a research emphasis before 1850. Our department invites applications from dynamic instructors capable of implementing innovative high-impact pedagogies that will engage our students in the study of art history and help develop the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills of both General Education students and Art majors. The ideal candidate is a scholar who centers concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice in their research, teaching, and service.

We welcome candidates who will support and expand the Art History program’s efforts to create a globally oriented art history curriculum, decentering the traditional European canon in favor of art histories that highlight artists of different races, genders, and nationalities/cultural origins. We seek an expert in the history of Asian art, with the potential to teach introductory surveys that introduce students to the breadth of Asian art and advanced courses that reflect the Sacramento region’s diverse Asian communities, particularly in areas that are often neglected in the history of Asian art (e.g., South Asia, Southeast Asia, and/or Central Asia). As a member of the Art Department, the hire will collaborate with colleagues in Art History, Art Education, and Studio Art, as well as with Asian Studies faculty across campus, in various service roles and as a part of University projects such as the Anchor University Initiative.

The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 - $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $74,642.

JOB DUTIES:
- Teach the equivalent of four undergraduate art history classes each semester (12 weighted semester units)
- Maintain an active research agenda in area of scholarly specialization
- Develop curriculum
- Engage actively with the local and regional community through teaching, research, and/or service
- Assist with academic advising, mentoring of students, and recruitment of majors/minors
- Assist with campus activities involving art history (student club, annual art history symposium, etc.)
- Collaborate with colleagues on department, college, and university committees and assist with departmental initiatives
- Work in partnership with the Asian Studies program

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in Art History, Visual Culture/Studies, or a related field with a research focus in the history of Asian art/visual culture before 1850. ABD will be considered. If ABD, degree must be completed by August 2024
- Subject knowledge necessary to teach the history of Asian art broadly from the prehistoric to the contemporary
- Demonstrated or potential effectiveness in teaching
- Active research agenda with the potential to contribute meaningfully to the field of Asian art history before 1850

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Commitment to and experience with student-centered teaching and mentoring that engages a variety of learners
- Commitment to and experience with inclusive and anti-racist teaching methods
- Record of scholarship in area of specialization
- One year of teaching experience at the college/university level
- Ability to teach courses that include art that reflects CSUS’s diverse Asian communities (e.g., Southeast Asia, South Asia, and/or Central Asia)
- Demonstrated potential to design new courses and/or curricula
- Demonstrated potential to foster teaching, research, and/or service collaborations with colleagues from a variety of disciplines (including Studio Art, Art Education, and/or Asian Studies)
- Demonstrated potential to collaborate with community organizations, develop international programs, and/or curate exhibitions
- Demonstrated potential to teach and mentor students in the Certificate in Curatorial Studies
