CROSSING BORDERS – Transnational Networks of Pioneering Women Artists.

The focus of this seminar and the related research project is on pioneering women artists who were active in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Baltic countries, Poland, Romania and Germany in the long nineteenth century.

The seminar aims to examine the opportunities women artists had to study and work in their home countries, but also their opportunities to travel abroad. Thus, it highlights especially the connections and networks these artists had or built with Germany. The principal German cities in this respect are Düsseldorf, Dresden, Berlin, Munich, Karlsruhe and Weimar.

Besides the gender, the aspect of centre and periphery in different fields of art and culture is also essential here. In the nineteenth century, Germany constituted a centre whereas the Nordic and the Baltic countries, as well as Poland and Romania, were regarded as peripheries in the field of arts, culture and science. Here the concept of periphery is understood as a geographical spatial element that is outside the centre. It is noteworthy though that there were centres and peripheries within each country, and the juxtaposition also concerned their mutual relationships.
The approach of this project is mainly art historical but also cultural-historical, and the topic is examined from the perspectives of education, networks, travel, and transnationalism.
