Third International Symposium on Noucentisme.
Comparative Mediterraneanisms: Noucentisme, Novecento, and the Politics of Modernist Classicism

The Casa Italiana and Department of Italian Studies at New York University and the Fundació Rafael Masó invite proposals for new scholarship on Catalan Noucentisme and Italian Novecento.

To what extent may we speak of a shared Mediterranean modernism in the twentieth century’s first decades? Are such affinities limited solely to aesthetic questions, or do they admit any wider ideological sympathies? To what extent did a rhetorical and pictorial “Latinity” anticipate, hasten, or abet a cultural politics of fascist reaction? Other topics and themes might include (without being limited to): Margherita Sarfatti’s visit to Spain and connections with the Primo de Rivera regime; Eugeni d’Ors and Margherita Sarfatti, affinities and divergences; the politics of Picasso’s Mediterraneanism; the role of Paris in triangulating Italian and Catalan/Spanish culture; World War One and the rappel à l’ordre; Empúries, Rome, and the politics of archaeology; criticism and reception.

Submissions will be accepted on a wide range of topics/media, from a wide range of scholars, including graduate students, recent PhDs, and independent researchers.

Cross-disciplinary approaches are especially welcomed.

Please submit an abstract of 500 words, along with a brief CV, to Dr. Jordi Falgàs, Fundació Rafael Masó (jfalgasrafaelmaso.org) and Dr. Ara Merjian, NYU (merjiannyu.edu).

Submissions should be sent to all of the parties listed above by December 16, 2022.
