An der Technischen Universität Darmstadt, Fachbereich Humanwissenschaften, Arbeitsbereich Mode & Ästhetik, ist im Rahmen des DFG-Projektes „Eine kritische Kunstgeschichte internationaler Ausstellungen und Weltausstellungen: Mode und Modernen dezentrieren/A Critical Art History of International and World Expositions: Decentering Fashion and Modernities“ im Teilprojekt „Fashioning the World: Decentering Style and Modernity at World’s Fairs“ ab 01. Oktober 2022 die Stelle für eine_n Wiss. Mitarbeiter_in (w/m/d) – 65% zur Promotion für die Dauer der Projektlaufzeit von drei Jahren zu besetzen.

Die Weltausstellungen des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts haben wichtige Impulse für die Geschichte der Kunst und Mode gesetzt. In dem Forschungsprojekt sollen erstmals die verflochtenen Geschichten von Kunst und Mode im Kontext der Weltausstellungen grundlegend aufgearbeitet werden vor dem Hintergrund von Kolonialismus, Imperialismus und Globalisierung. Im Mittelpunkt des Teilprojektes stehen Fragen nach der Rolle von Mode und Textilien im globalisierten Kontext des künstlerischen Austauschs auf den Weltausstellungen und nach den Strategien der Modernekonzeptionen von Mode, die nicht nur durch die Kunst, sondern auch durch die Technisierung der Modeproduktion auf den Weltausstellungen verfolgt werden.

Aufgabengebiet:
Aufgabe ist die Bearbeitung eines Promotionsprojekts im inhaltlichen Rahmen des Teilprojekts „Fashioning the World: Decentering Style and Modernity at World’s Fairs“. Es handelt sich dabei um eines von zwei Teilprojekten zur Erforschung von ‚peripheren‘ Positionen auf den Weltausstellungen des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts aus kunsthistorischer und modetheoretischer Perspektive. Eine Beteiligung der Darmstädter Künstlerkolonie an den Weltausstellungen, z.B. in Bezug auf das „Darmstädter Zimmer“, sollte mitberücksichtigt werden. Eine theoretische Verortung und/oder inhaltliche Auseinandersetzung innerhalb der Critical Studies, postkolonialer und genderkritischer Diskurse ist wünschenswert. Im Zentrum des zu bearbeitenden Teilprojektes steht die Anfertigung einer Dissertationsschrift in beschriebener inhaltlicher Ausrichtung. Die Mitarbeit an zwei Konferenzen, der Publikation der Konferenzergebnisse und der Kooperation mit dem Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte (DFK) Paris, der Universität der Künste Berlin (UDK Berlin) sowie der Stiftung Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt wird erwartet.

Ihre Voraussetzungen:
- Sehr guter wissenschaftlicher Hochschulabschluss im Bereich Kunstgeschichte, Modetheorie oder visuelle Kulturwissenschaft mit entsprechendem kunstgeschichtlichem Schwerpunkt
- Interesse an kunsthistorischen und -theoretischen Fragestellungen mit einem Schwerpunkt im 19. und in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, und mit Interesse für postkoloniale Fragestellungen (eigenes Forschungsprojekt in diesem Themenbereich)
- Hohe Motivation zur interdisziplinären und internationalen Zusammenarbeit, Teamfähigkeit
- Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse sowie gute Französisch- und Deutschkenntnisse sind erwünscht

The World’s Fairs of the 19th and early 20th centuries gave rise to significant impulses for the histories of art and fashion. This research project will fundamentally conduct for the first time the entangled histories of art and fashion against the background of colonialism, imperialism and globalisation. The sub-project focuses on questions about the role of fashion and textiles in the globalised context of artistic exchange at the World’s Fairs and about the strategies of modernity conceptions of fashion pursued not only through art but also through the mechanisation of fashion production at the world exhibitions.

Your tasks are:
The task is to work on a doctoral project within the context of the sub-project "Fashioning the World: Decentering Style and Modernity at World's Fairs". This is one of two sub projects investigating 'peripheral' positions at the world's fairs of the 19th and early 20th centuries from the perspective of art history and fashion theory. Participation of the Darmstadt artists' colony in the world exhibitions, e.g. in relation to the "Darmstadt Room", should also be taken into account. A theoretical location and/or content-related discussion within critical studies, postcolonial and gender critical discourses is desirable. The focus of the sub-project to be worked on is the preparation of a dissertation in the described thematic orientation. Participation in two conferences, the publication of conference results and cooperation with the German Centre for Art History (DFK) Paris, Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) and the Stiftung Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt is expected.

What we expect from you:
- excellent academic university degree in the field of art history, fashion theory or visual cultural studies with a corresponding focus on art history,
- interest in art historical and theoretical issues with a focus on the 19th and first half of the 20th century, and with an interest in postcolonial issues (own research project in this subject area)
- high motivation to be involved in interdisciplinary and international collaboration, a capacity for teamwork
- very good written and spoken English; a good working knowledge of German and French is desirable.
