Tomislav Krizman and his contribution to Croatian culture and arts.
Scientific Conference on the 140th Anniversary of the Birth of Tomislav Krizman (1882–1955)

Graphic artist, painter, graphic and stage designer Tomislav Krizman (1882 – 1955) is one of the leading Croatian artists of the first half of the 20th century, an artist who played a prominent role in promoting and shaping of Croatian culture and art, and significantly marked the history of Croatian print, graphic design, decorative arts and stage design. He was a co-founder of several art associations (Medulić, Proljetni salon, Djelo) and actively participated in the organization of exhibitions and presentations of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes / Yugoslavia at major international exhibitions (Exposition international des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, Paris, 1925; World Exhibition, Barcelona, 1929). During his prolific career, Krizman held numerous prominent positions as a stage designer of the Zagreb National Theatre, curator and director of the Modern Gallery and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.
On the 140th anniversary of the birth of Tomislav Krizman, the Chair of Modern Art and Visual Communications of the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb and the Archives of Fine Arts of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts are organizing a scientific conference whose aim is to view Krizman’s work and overall contribution from different areas of expertise. Although Tomislav Krizman is one of the most prominent Croatian artists of the first half of the 20th century, his life, work and contribution have only been fragmentarily researched, interpreted, and contextualized. His oeuvre was last time integrally presented at a retrospective exhibition held at the Art Pavilion in Zagreb almost three decades ago (1995) and his artistic opus has not yet been presented in a monograph. This scientific conference aims to update the research on the work and role of Tomislav Krizman, encourage new readings and reviews of his oeuvre and, for the first time, fully consider his overall contribution to Croatian culture and art.
