Birgit Reinert

The Free University Berlin invites applicants for a doctoral fellowship in art history. The doctoral candidate will become a member of the group project “Shared Protocols. Assemblies in Contemporary Art” which is a part of the DFG CRC 1512 “Intervening Arts”. The four-year position is to be filled per direct (m/f/d, 65%, limited to 31.12.25)

The CRC 1512 ‟Intervening Arts“ is interested in the enabling and activating faculties of the arts and investigates their potential to create social relations and instigate political discord by establishing artistic processes of perception and practices. Today, perhaps more than ever, the arts claim to have an impact on society. The CRC assembles arts-related disciplines with philosophy, history, sociology, and cultural anthropology.

The CRC 1512 is located at the Freie Universität Berlin and cooperates with the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Universität der Künste Berlin, the Europa-Universität Viadrina, Frankfurt (Oder) and the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.

Job description:
The main focus of the doctoral position will be on the history of participatory art in the framework of exhibition histories since the 1990s. The PhD project will research the various formats of assembly, such as tribunes, parliaments, symposia and talk shows, which have become increasingly common within artistic and curatorial practices during the past decades.

The Ph.D. position is embedded within the individual project Shared Protocols: Assemblies in Contemporary Art, led by Prof. Eric C. H. de Bruyn, which consists of three related research tracts and forms part of the new Collaborative Research Centre research programme “Intervening Arts” (CRC 1512), which is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The individual project Shared Protocols inquires how artistic assemblies stage the protocols of communicative and participatory action and intervene within the spatial, institutional and social configurations of the visual arts in North America, South America, and Europe.

The doctoral candidate will participate in the common activities of the CRC research programme (e.g. working groups), assume responsibilities in co-organizing and coordinating activities and events of the project (e.g. workshops and conferences) with academic partners and cultural institutions, and publically present his/her/their research by means of lectures and publications.

The position serves the own scientific Qualification.

Requirements:
You must hold a master’s degree in art history or related fields
A high level of fluency in both spoken and written German and English is required.

Desirable:
We are seeking junior researchers with a background in the history and theory of modern and contemporary art with research experience.
