Bisher bestätigte Teilnehmer:innen des Festivals sind: Taslima Ahmed, Kathrin Barutzki, Bice Curiger, Arthur Fink, Nelly Gawellek, Nina Gerlach, Raphael Hefti, Camille Henrot, Alexander Kluge, Franziska Kunze, Charlotte Lang, Petra Lange-Berndt, Doreen Mende, Klasse Marcel Odenbach, Dietmar Rübel, Magnus Schäfer, Sophia Stang, Michael Trier.

"Productive Image Interference"
Festival, Düsseldorf, November 25 – 27, 2021
Deadline for submissions: June 14, 2021

Hosted by: Anna Polke Foundation, Cologne, in collaboration with Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf

Fake news employing image manipulation (despite HD resolution), virtual reality, an endless cosmos of JPEGs and GIFs: we have long been living with the awareness that we cannot trust our own eyes and that images, whether manually or technologically produced, are less concerned with depicting reality but more with actually producing it – incorporating transmission errors, losses in quality, hacks, and other interference. While Sigmar Polke was studying at Düsseldorf Art Academy in the early 1960s, his interest quickly turned to the imagery of his time that was being widely circulated by the mass media. Transmission and interference, the transforming and recoding of such imagery, the glitches in imagery that result or are exposed, became a motif and early trademark in his raster, that is dot matrix, paintings, remaining a central tool in his work thereafter. In view of current technological developments, it is not surprising that it is just as fruitful for today’s artists to make use of the ever-growing continuum of imagery and contexts in order to create something new.

For what would have been Sigmar Polke’s 80th birthday, the Anna Polke Foundation and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf are organizing an anniversary project consisting of an exhibition and a festival. It is taking place under the auspices of Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Minister for Culture and Science in North-Rhine Westphalia, and supported by the Ministry for Culture and Science in North-Rhine Westphalia, Kunststiftung NRW, and the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne. Under the exhibition title "Productive Image Interference" (Nov. 13, 2021 – Feb. 6, 2022), works by Sigmar Polke will be entering into a dialogue with a range of current artistic practices. The participating artists are: Kerstin Brätsch, Phoebe Collings-James, Raphael Hefti, Camille Henrot, Trevor Paglen, Sigmar Polke, Seth Price, Max Schulze, Avery Singer.

The international festival at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, accompanying the exhibition and taking place over several days (November 25 – 27, 2021), will be a discussion of Image Interference in terms of its origins, perceptual conditions and manifestations, as well as its productive potential – then and now – encompassing both theory and art practice-based presentations. The festival’s objective is to initiate a discourse between art and academia, opening up new perspectives on both Sigmar Polke’s work and art production today with regard to the specific issue of Productive Image Interference in contemporary art. The program will be divided into three interconnected sections: "Sieht man ja was es ist" ("You Can See What It Is") will address the use and truthfulness of imagery, focusing on the political potential of image interference. "History of Everything" draws attention to existent imagery that is in circulation as the source of any image production, while "Desastres und andere bare Wunder" ("Disasters and Other Sheer Miracles") will be concentrating on the inner life and agency of the materials as such and the range of ways it interferes with imagery.

Contributors to the festival who have already been confirmed are: Taslima Ahmed, Kathrin Barutzki, Bice Curiger, Arthur Fink, Nelly Gawellek, Nina Gerlach, Raphael Hefti, Camille Henrot, Alexander Kluge, Franziska Kunze, Charlotte Lang, Petra Lange-Berndt, Doreen Mende, Marcel Odenbach’s students, Dietmar Rübel, Magnus Schäfer, Sophia Stang, and Michael Trier.

Both academics and artists are being invited to submit papers. Proposals for the following types of presentation are very welcome: lecture (performance) (max. 30 mins.), artist’s talk (max. 30 mins.), individual lecture (max. 30 mins.), insert (max. 15 mins.).

A bilingual publication of presentations from the festival is planned. Travel and accommodation costs will also be covered. An in-person event is envisaged, but the feasibility of such an event will be considered in terms of the corona pandemic safety measures in place and, if necessary, may be transformed into a (partially) virtual event.

Please submit your German or English abstract (max. 350 words) together with a brief curriculum vitae by June 14, 2021 to Sophia Stang (stanganna-polke-stiftung.com). You will receive a response by the middle of July.
