Transatlantic Dialogues in the History of Art

Europe, Paris, France

The Institut national d'histoire de l'art, Ecole normale supérieure, and
Université Paris-Ouest Nanterre La Défense, in association with the Terra
Foundation for American Art, are organizing a two-day scholarly event on May
20-21 with the theme "Transatlantic Dialogues in the History of Art." This
gathering will bring together a range of American and European scholars
working on diverse aspects of art and culture of the United States. While the
disciplinary terrain within art-historical scholarship is often circumscribed
by a nationalist framework for study and interpretation, especially within
the field of American art, the aim of this event is to open a dialogue around
the ways in which both culture and scholarship are traversed by
cross-cultural exchanges. This scholarly event will provide a forum for a
series of informal presentations and discussions on current research and
methodologies that foreground the importance of international dialogues.
Organized by Jody Patterson, Terra Foundation Teaching Fellow in American
