Interdisziplinäres Symposium: "Die Transformation der Orte.
Annäherungen an die nationalsozialistischen Konzentrations- und
Vernichtungslager"

Inhaltliches Konzept
An vielen Orten im deutschen Herrschaftsbereich existierten
nationalsozialistische Lager als Mittel von Ausgrenzung,
Unterdrückung, Ausbeutung, Zwang und massenhaftem Mord. Ort und
Ereignis stehen dabei in einem komplexen Verhältnis wechselseitiger
Beeinflussung. Jede Forschung zur Geschichte der Lager, jede Form
einer Gedenkpraxis und jeder Beitrag künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung
nimmt implizit oder explizit auf den jeweiligen Ort Bezug. Das
Symposium wählt ihn daher zum Referenz- und Ausgangspunkt: Die
historischen und aktuellen Ereignisse, welche die (ehemaligen) Lager
betreffen, sollen in den Beiträgen im Zusammenhang mit den räumlich-
materiellen Gegebenheiten an den jeweiligen Orten untersucht werden.

Durch diese Perspektive lassen sich nicht nur bestimmte Zeitpunkte
betrachten, sondern es geraten darüber hinaus Prozesse der
Transformation, des "Davor" und "Danach" in den Blick. Auf einem
anonymen Gelände entstand ein Lager, nach der Befreiung blieben
erinnerte, u. U. gestaltete oder öffentlich nicht thematisierte und
unkenntlich gemachte Plätze. Der gewählte Ansatz der "Transformation
der Orte" untersucht daher die Wandlung des Ortes zum Lager, den Ort
des Lagers selbst und die Wandlung der Orte der Verbrechen zu Orten
der Erinnerung oder des Vergessens.

Das Symposium geht von einem Raumbegriff aus, der ihn als materielle
Gegebenheit erfasst, deren spezifische Ausprägung als sozial bedingt
und sozial wirkmächtig verstanden wird. Innerhalb eines Raums sind
Orte durch Grenzen definiert, um sich voneinander sowie von der
Umgebung unterscheiden zu können. Daher ist ein Ort notwendig
relational zu denken.

Die Veranstaltung bezieht sich auf aktuelle Diskussionen um den so
genannten Spatial Turn. Ziel ist es dabei weder, ihn als Kuhnschen
Paradigmenwechsel mit transdisziplinärer Geltung zu verkünden noch als
bloßes forschungsstrategisches Modewort zu entlarven. Vielmehr sollen
die Begriffe "Raum" und "Ort" als produktives Werkzeug zur
Thesenbildung verstanden werden, das in besonderem Maße geeignet ist,
einen interdisziplinären Austausch zu fördern. Eine Analyse der
konkreten Gegebenheiten vor Ort wird der Auratisierung und damit
Mystifizierung der ehemaligen Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager
entgegen gestellt.

Themenfelder
Das Symposium gliedert sich in drei Sektionen:
1. Der historische Ort der Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager
2. Der erinnerte oder nicht-erinnerte Ort auf den Geländen vormaliger
Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager
3. Künstlerische, d.h. literarische, filmische oder bildnerische
Auseinandersetzungen mit und an den Orten (ehemaliger) Konzentrations-
und Vernichtungslager

Folgende Themenfelder erscheinen geeignet für eine ortsbezogene
(synchrone oder diachrone) Untersuchung:

- Die Gegebenheiten am Standort eines Konzentrations- oder
Vernichtungslagers zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt: Seine Umgebung,
Nachbarschaft, Infrastruktur, seine Materialität als Struktur,
Architektur und Gestaltung.

- Die Multifunktionalität des Ortes: Zunächst zum Beispiel als Wald,
Naherholungsgebiet oder Fabrik, dann als Unterkunftslager für
unterschiedliche Gruppen KZ-Gefangener, als Standort von Zwangsarbeit
und Wirtschaftsbetrieb, als Ort von Ausschluss, Exekutionen,
Vernichtung, als Arbeits-, Wohn- und Ausbildungsort der SS-Angehörigen
und jetzt als Gedenkstätte, Friedhof, Museum, Wohnort oder
Wirtschaftsfaktor.

- Soziale Praktiken am und in Bezug auf den Ort: Hier geht es sowohl
um das Handeln der Akteur/innen und die Abläufe innerhalb des Lagers
als auch um die verschiedenen Nach- und Umnutzungen wie z.B.
Gedenkzeremonien und Führungen, aber auch Graffiti und Einträge in das
Besucherbuch.

- Wahrnehmungen und Deutungen des Ortes: Durch unterschiedliche
Häftlinge und Häftlingsgruppen, SS-Angehörige und ihre Familien, durch
die Mehrheitsgesellschaft, Politik, Medien und Wissenschaft, durch
Gedenkstättenmitarbeiter/innen und -besucher/innen oder Anwohner/innen.

- Repräsentationen des Ortes: In den Plänen vor der Errichtung der
Lager, in der Konzeption von Gedenkstätten, Denkmalen und
Ausstellungen, in der konkreten Gestaltung der Orte, durch
künstlerische und literarische Arbeiten und gesellschaftliche
Diskussionen.

Organisatorisches
Das Spektrum des Symposiums ist disziplinübergreifend angelegt und
richtet sich in erster Linie an Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen. Die
Zahl der Teilnehmer/innen ist auf 30 beschränkt, um eine intensive
Arbeitsatmosphäre zu gewährleisten. Für jeden Beitrag ist insgesamt
eine Stunde vorgesehen, wobei die Vortragszeit max. 30 Minuten
beträgt. Tagungssprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch. Die Beiträge
werden in einem Tagungsband veröffentlicht.

Erbeten werden ein Abstract von maximal einer Seite Länge, in dem das
Vortragsvorhaben skizziert wird, sowie ein kurzer Lebenslauf mit
Stichworten zu den Forschungsinteressen an die Email-Adresse:

Stichtag der Einsendung ist der 26.04.2009. Die Rückmeldung über
Annahme oder Ablehnung der Beiträge erfolgt bis zum 15.05.2009. Die
Kosten für Unterkunft und Anreise werden erstattet (vorbehaltlich der
Förderzusagen).

Interdisciplinary Symposium: "The transformation of the sites.
Approaches to the Nazi concentration and extermination camps"

Thematic concept

In many areas under German rule there were National Socialist camps
which functioned as a means of exclusion, suppression, exploitation,
compulsion and murder. Place and event served to mutually influence
each other. Every work of research dealing with the history of the
camps, every form of commemorative remembrance, every type of artistic
contribution refers implicitly or explicitly to the specific site
concerned. This is why the project chooses the site as a starting
point: Both historical and current events concerning the (former)
camps will be examined in connection with the spatial-material
conditions at the sites. This perspective enables the analysis of
events at a specific point in time as well as general processes of
transformation, the "before" and "after". On an anonymous site a camp
was constructed. After the liberation there remained places that were
remembered, some that were designed, others made unrecognisable and
others that were publicly unmentioned. The approach of "the
transformation of the sites" investigates the processes involved in
changing a site to a camp, analyses the camp itself and examines the
transformation of the sites of crimes during the Nazi period to sites
of memory or lack of memory.

The symposium uses a concept of space that is understood as a material
condition, whose specific form is conceived as being socially
conditioned and socially effective.
Places within a space are defined by borders, in order to
differentiate one from the other, as well as from the surroundings.
Therefore, a place should be considered as being relational.

The conference refers to current discussions about the so-called
spatial turn. However, the aim is neither to enunciate it as a
"Kuhnian" paradigmatic change with trans-disciplinary validity, nor to
unmask it as a mere in-word used strategically for research purposes.
Rather, the terms "site", "space" and "place" will be used as
productive tools in the development of hypotheses which are especially
suited to the promotion of an academic exchange.
An analysis of the concrete conditions on the ground is put forward,
in contradistinction to any subsequent mystification and creation of
an aura around former Nazi concentration and extermination camps.

Thematic fields

The symposium falls into three sections:
1. The historical site of the concentration and extermination camps
2. The remembered or not remembered site of former Nazi concentration
and extermination camps
3. The artistic representation of the sites in various art forms e.g.
literature, films, paintings, drawings and photography as well as
exhibitions held at the memorial sites themselves

The following thematic fields are deemed to be suitable for an
analysis for an (synchronic or diachronic) examination applying the
concept of space:

- The conditions of a site at a concentration or extermination camp at
a certain point in time: its surroundings, its vicinity, its
infrastructure, its materiality as a structure, architecture, its lay-
out and shaping.

- The multi-functionality of the site: for example first as forest, as
a nearby recreational area or factory, than as a camp for different
groups of prisoners, as a location for slave labour and related
economic activity, as a place of exclusion, of executions, of
extermination, as work place, place of residence and training area for
members of the SS and now as memorial site, cemetery, museum or
tourist attraction.

- Social practices both on the site itself and with reference to it:
this section is concerned with the actions of the participants and
protagonists and the course of events in the camps as well as with the
different uses that were made of the camps after the liberation such
as memorial ceremonies, guided tours but also graffiti and entries in
the visitor's book.

- Perceptions and interpretations of the sites: by individual
prisoners and prisoner groups, by members of the SS and their
families, by society at large, by politics, media and academia, by
memorial site employees and visitors or residents.

- Representations of the site: in the construction plans before the
erection of the camps, in the concepts of memorial sites, in
monuments, in exhibitions and in the concrete lay-out and shaping of
the sites, through artistic and literary works and public discussions.

Organisational aspects

The spectrum of the symposium transcends the different disciplines and
is primarily oriented towards young scholars. The number of
participants is restricted to 30, in order to facilitate an intensive
work atmosphere. For each contribution one hour is allotted, from
which a maximum of 30 minutes is reserved for the presentation. The
papers will subsequently be published in an anthology.

An abstract of one page outlining the suggested presentation is
requested along with an accompanying CV indicating research interest.

The closing date for submission is: 26 April 2009. A reply concerning
successful and unsuccessful applications will be given by: 15 May
2009. The costs of accommodation and travel will be reimbursed.
