ECRITS SUR L'ART - 2 : DECRIRE L'OEUVRE D'ART

Colloque international organisé par la S.A.I.T.
Institut du Monde Anglophone, Paris III, Sorbonne Nouvelle

20 et 21 juin 2008

Le colloque 2008 de la S.A.I.T (société sur l'étude de l'intertextualité
dans le monde anglophone) se propose d'approfondir la réflexion
entamée dans
celui de 2007, convoqué sous le signe de la question fondamentale que
pose
Louis Marin : " [...] pourquoi parler du tableau s'il suffit, pour
accomplir
la finalité de l'acte de peindre, d'y prendre plaisir ou jouissance ?
", et
d'une analyse de la possible contradiction entre la parole et la
perception
de l'art visuel. Les propositions pour 2008 pourront donc porter sur
les
modalités de l'écriture sur l'art (analyse technique, référence,
allusion,
tropes sollicités) ainsi que sur ses enjeux pragmatiques
(construction d'un
contexte d'interprétation, d'évaluation, de réception de l'oeuvre
d'art).
Qu'est-ce qu'écrire sur l'art ? Comment décrit-on l'oeuvre d'art ?
Pour qui
et pourquoi ? En mettant l'accent sur les avatars du discours sur
l'art et
sur son incidence sur l'oeuvre d'art, on pourra ainsi mieux évaluer les
répercussions de ces pratiques littéraires et critiques sur la
production
artistique (peinture, photographie, architecture, art des
jardins...), et sur
le goût dans l'aire anglophone.
Nous invitons des propositions qui traiteraient de sujets tels que :

Les formes de l'écrit sur l'art et la question du genre - essai,
fiction,
poésie, traités, critique...

La confrontation du visuel et du textuel : la possibilité de représenter
l'art par l'écrit.

Le role de l'ekphrasis dans la réception, contemporaine ou différée, de
l'oeuvre d'art : définition de valeurs et réécriture du canon.

La part de l'esthétique littéraire implicite au genre ou celle de
l'esthétique propre à chaque type d'art dans le mode d'écriture
adopté par
l'auteur. Certaines lectures, certains modes discursifs, certains
styles
sont-ils " programmés " par les œuvres ?

Bien entendu, ces suggestions ne sont pas exhaustives. Des

WRITINGS ON ART - 2: DESCRIBING THE ARTWORK

An international conference to be held at the Institut du Monde
Anglophone,
University of Paris III, Sorbonne Nouvelle

Organised by the S.A.I.T.

June 20-21, 2008

For its 2008 conference, the S.A.I.T., the French scholarly society
for the
study of artistic and literary intertextuality in the English-speaking
world, will pursue the process of reflection undertaken in its 2007
conference, "Writings on Art." The conference will explore ways of
answering the question posed by Louis Marin - "[...] why does one
even need to
comment on a painting if the end envisaged by the painter's action
can be
achieved simply by experiencing pleasure or jouissance?" - and analyse
possible contradictions between language and the perception of the
visual
arts.

We invite proposals for papers that examine the modes by which
writing on
art approaches the work of art (technical analysis, reference,
allusion, the
various tropes resorted to), and the pragmatic implications of such
writing
(the construction of a context for the interpretation, evaluation, and
reception of works of art). What is at stake in writing on art? How are
works of art to be described? To what ends, and for what readership?

Focusing on the various modes of art writing and on its repercussions
on the
art work, we shall seek new ways of assessing the impact of literary and
critical practice upon the production of art (in painting, photography,
architecture, gardens, etc.) and upon taste in the English-speaking
world.

Topics may include, but are by no means limited to:

Modes of art writing and their integration within specific literary and
critical genres, including essays, fiction, poetry, treatises, reviews.

The relationship between writing and art, and the extent to which the
written text can represent the visual.

Ekphrasis and its impact on the reception - contemporary or deferred
- of
works of art: defining values, rewriting the canon.

The choice of a mode of writing: the influence of genre-specific
literary
aesthetics, and of the aesthetics informing the work of art. Are
there ways
in which works may "programme" specific readings, discursive modes or
styles?
